Introduction Set the tone for your speech with a brief introduction. Consider starting with a light-hearted joke to connect with your audience (keep jokes to a minimum and avoid joking about value of the award, itself). Example: “Wow, thank you! What an honor! I have so many people to thank but I’ll keep this short because I know they’re about to serve dessert!” Gratitude Express gratitude toward any people and organizations that helped you get the award. Example: “I’d like to thank the Family Forefront for leading the conversation about health, safety, and education.” Issues Feel free to mention a cause or issue you care about during your speech, but make sure it’s related and will not offend the audience or organizers of the event. Example: “It’s clear to me that the current education system is not perfect—treating students like customers and favoring the highest bidders—but the passion and dedication in this room is a sign that we’re moving forward in the fight for equal access.” Goals If you’re representing an organization, briefly mention that organization’s goals and pay respect to their mission. Example: “I’m honored to be a part of this organization—increasing the acceptance and visibility of non-binary artists is a cause very dear to my heart.” Benefactors Make a list of all the people you want to thank. Depending on how much time you have, you might not be able to list everybody so it may be best to thank people in groups. Examples: “I’d like to thank the hard-working group of electrical engineers on set who brought my vision to life.” “I can’t express how thankful I am to have had all of the volunteers working so hard for this cause.” Inspiration Think of who or what inspired you to take the path that led to winning the award. Example: “I can’t leave the stage without recognizing the amazing teachers who volunteer their time. They inspire me every day to keep going, keep learning, and never forget the value of even one child’s education.” Optimistic Ending End on a positive note, inspiring audience members and showing hope and excitement for the future. Be sure to thank the audience! Example: “While I love fancy parties, I’m excited to get back into the field and connect with as many students, parents, and teachers as possible. I am honored to lead the way toward a healthier, happier community, which you are all a part of. Thank you all!”
