Ok, for some reason my 70k character post is generating a 502 error. Is there a way to get around this or do I have to just make a post with less characters?

A 502 Error means, “Bad Gateway”, which means that one of Discourse’s servers received some invalid data from your post. You probably need to not post so many characters.

I see. so what if I post 50-60k instead? I mean the character limit is around 80k-ish.

Also, considering the fact that I’m posting emojis, would it be less likely to throw an error if I were instead posting normal characters (ie. letters and numbers)?

I wish that I could answer you question, but I can’t. The error code means that one of Discourse’s servers recived invalid data from your post, and there is unfortunately no further information. It’s possible that emojis count for more than 1 character, and the character limit has been surpassed by so much that a proper error message cannot be displayed.

That may be so. I mean you can post emojis by typing :emoji: (replace the word emoji with the name of the emoji), but I’ve been trying to post them directly from my iPad’s keyboard instead of typing them out.

Having excessive emojis in your post has a tendency to freeze the browser. My phone froze when I went to your potato revolution thread. I get that that thread was made for fun, but to be fair, there isn’t a reason for a post to have so many lines of emojis. So please try to consider netiquette when you’re posting something with a lot of emojis. Thanks!

I believe that an emoji can “be” up to 9 characters, as in, it takes up 9 characters. And like Zygomatt said, a lot can overload mobile devices or even some older computers.

Edit: Actually, it appears that some emojis can be up to 70 characters, depending on which one it is.

Yea, sorry about that. I mean I created the thread so people could still have their potato fun without causing problems on the others threads, but I might’ve overlooked a few things.

Yeah, I guess you’re essentially condensing multiple characters down into 1 displayed character, and when lower-end devices try to unpack it for processing, especially considering how many it’d have to process, it overloads it.(at least I think that’s how that works)

I think it is a bad idea to post tonnes of emoji. One is fine, but posting more than one can slow down rendering. And spamming emoji or behaving too immaturely on forum threads could potentially result in moderator action. Our forums were designed for civilized discussion, not immature behavior.

Some games and jokes it is okay to do so, but on others it will probably annoy more users. Here is an idea: why not create an emoji-only thread? Then we can place as many emoji as we want to.

Well I mean, that was kinda gonna be this thread (sort of) but we’ve already got one person saying that they crashed trying to view this thread, so idk.

Wait, 70?! Which ones?!:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:You can tell me; it’s not as if I’d do something irresponsible with that information.🥲

I don’t know which ones, I just saw it mentioned in a forum somewhere.

Oop,
Don’t the “ Post something in emoji ” threads count as such threads?
Meanwhile, I do think that admins should lock the “Potato revolution” thread.
