Fun Facts About Animals & Wildlife

  • You might remember this from the riddle above—but it really does take sloths days or weeks to digest their food! That’s because their digestion rate is linked to their metabolism, which is also very low. So, they eat small amounts of food daily (and only once there’s enough room in their stomachs for it).

  • Turtles are part of one of the world’s oldest reptile groups—older even than snakes, crocodiles, and alligators. They date back over 200 million years! Impressive, right?

  • Rabbits express happiness in a totally adorable way. They make a leap into the air (complete with twists and kicks mid-air) that’s called a “binky” to show when they’re happy. They can also purr!

  • Honey bees fly at speeds of around 15-20 miles per hour (25 km per hour) and beat their wings around 200 times per second.

  • They don’t have external ears, but snakes can definitely still hear! That’s because they still have internal ear structures that connect to their lower jaw, and they can sense vibrations in the environment around them.

  • You probably know that cheetahs are the fastest land animals in the world, but did you know they also have natural “sunglasses”? Those distinctive black tear-shaped stripes on their faces are thought to help protect their eyes from the sun (which is helpful, since they hunt during the day to avoid competition with other big cats, like lions).

  • Of all the world’s mammals, the elephant is the only one unable to jump. Wild, right? It’s because their leg structure—and their immense body mass. So, they can rear up on two legs or run when they have to, but jumping is out of the question!

  • Only male peafowls (peacocks) have those bright, eye-catching blue-green tail feathers that we all know and love. Female peafowls (called “peahens”) actually have a much more subtle gray-brown coloring.

  • A lion’s roar is powerful enough to be heard up to 5 miles (8 km) away! It can also reach around 114 decibels, which is nearly as loud as a chainsaw. It’s really no surprise these cats are compared to royalty!

  • When kangaroos are born, they’re only about the size of a jellybean! Weighing less than an ounce, these joeys (baby kangaroos) immediately climb into their mother’s pouches and spend about another 6 months there, growing.
