- The name “Santa Claus” evolved from Sinterklaas , the Dutch name for St. Nicholas.
- The classic Christmas carol “Jingle Bells” was originally called “One Horse Open Sleigh,” and it was actually written to be a Thanksgiving song.
- “Jingle Bells” was also the first song to be played in space. It was broadcast during NASA’s Gemini 6A space flight on December 16, 1965.
- Santa’s eight reindeer were first named in Clement Clarke Moore’s 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” also known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
- The character of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was actually created to promote and market the Montgomery Ward Department store in 1939. [1] X Research source
- The ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, which honored the God Saturn and marked the Winter solstice, inspired many later Christmas traditions. [2] X Research source
- In 1644, Christmas celebrations were actually made illegal in England and the English Colonies in America because Puritan lawmakers believed the celebrations were too decadent. This lasted for almost 20 years, although some people still celebrated in secret.
