Why do humans kiss?

What is the purpose of people kissing? What does it mean when people kiss? Why do people like to do it? I spent too long thinking about the actual mechanics of just pushing your mouth repeatedly against someone else's mouth and got weirded out...need someone to explain it to me.

Kissing shows affection. It's not purely romantic, either. Parents kiss their children, friends kiss friends, and in many cultures, people kiss each other in greeting. Plus, kissing feels good, which can explain why people like to do it. It releases chemicals in the brain that can reduce stress and provide pleasure.

People kiss in many different contexts for different reasons. For example, if someone kisses you on the first date, it could mean they are interested in pursuing a potential relationship with you, because if they feel that comfortable---comfortable enough to exchange saliva and to get in your personal space, and allow you to get in their personal space as well---they definitely can see some potential for a future with you. But again, some people are just touchy-feely.

Kissing can also serve as an expression of affection. I'd say that if somebody is willing to kiss you on the first date, one of their primary love languages is probably physical touch, because not everybody does that in the very beginning, but people who are very touchy-feely tend to have physical touch as their primary love language.

I think there are two sides to that question: 1) How can you tell if a woman wants a man to kiss her? and 2) How can you tell if a man wants to kiss a woman? If you want to know if a woman wants a man to kiss her, the pause where you have a lot of sexual tension is probably the best indication. If she just stares into his eyes and smiles and allows herself to feel butterflies, hopefully that's going to initiate the same response in him. Usually people will mirror each other in these kinds of situations. If he has some balls and he understands the situation, then he might just go for it. Obviously, if you're trying to get somebody else to do something, there's always that risk of they're not gonna understand completely, or if he's really shy, maybe he'll look away and then break that tension and the moment is gone. But that's the main thing—locking your eyes together, smiling, and just pausing. Take it slowly, you don't have to rush to anything.

If you're wondering how to tell if a man wants a woman to kiss him, he's probably going to be looking at her lips and awkwardly smiling a lot. But either way, there should be some sexual tension—you're looking at each other, you feel this thing, this energy or chemistry. There’s usually a lot of smiling going on and looking between the eyes and the lips. That's a good sign he wants to kiss.

The main way to tell if a guy wants to kiss you is by checking out his body language. Most guys won't ask you if they can kiss you; instead, you can pick up signs based on what he is doing with his body. Maybe he’s leaning in closer to you while you are talking, or his body has gotten closer to yours while you've been interacting. Check out his eyes: is he gently staring at you? Is he gazing in your eyes and then lookimg away and then quickly coming back to this gentle stare? Is he giving you flirty eyes, are they open a little wider than normal, almost giving you an enthusiastic expression? Oftentimes, guys will grin at you or give a cheeky smile if they want to kiss you.

Another great sign that he wants to kiss you is he'll give you subtle touches. If he gently touches your hands or back or any part of your body, this is a good indication that he may want to kiss you. Some guys like to tease girls too! So, if he seems to be innocently teasing you or playing with you then it could be because he actually wants to kiss you.

These are all great tips! For me, I could tell that he wanted to kiss because he leaned in close and got his face really close to mine. Like others said, there was that pause where we were just smiling at each other, but what really made me feel like he wanted to kiss me was when he leaned towards me and when our lips were just a few inches from each other I closed the gap :)

Kissing has no significance from a biological perspective, since it can't help you pass down your genes to the next generation. It's a way to "test" the other person. It's a way to test their behavior, their taste, their smell. I've heard that if you find the way they smell or taste unpleasant, even if it isn't really so, it means that you are too similar genetically and its a way of your body to warn you against that. It's a way to observe the other and to see if they're "worthy", strong enough, if you're compatible etc etc

That makes sense, thank you! So how can you tell when someone wants to kiss? When I'm on a date I can never tell and I feel like I miss the moment

I'd look for "the linger." This often happens at the end of the date, when you're saying good bye to each other but the other person finds more things to talk about or reasons to stick around and draw out the goodbye. This could be a sign that they're hoping for a kiss to close out the date.

"The linger" can also happen in the middle of a date, if their eyes linger on you. If the two of you are talking and then all of a sudden there's a lull in conversation and you find that you're locking eyes and leaning in closer to each other, that's also a sign they want to kiss!

Don't hold your breath while you're kissing. It's actually surprisingly easy to accidentally get light headed by forgetting to breathe when you're making out with someone. Try to take small, quiet breaths in between bigger kissing sessions.

Make sure that the other person is comfortable with being kissed! If you aren't sure you have consent, ask for it.

Make sure that your breath smells good! If you have a strong suspicion you may end up making out with someone, take a quick bathroom break and check your breath. If you have mints or gums, use them. If you're at home, there's nothing wrong with brushing your teeth after you "use the bathroom."

If the other person tries to remove your clothes or they begin to take their clothes off and you aren't ready, there's absolutely nothing wrong with stopping them and saying you're uncomfortable. If they get upset at that, it's a huge sign they aren't a good person to be with anyway.

If it's your first time, take it easy and don't rush it. Your partner is probably just as anxious and excited as you are, so don't worry that you aren't doing something correctly. Take things slow.

Don't forget to use your hands. Try playing with their hair or rubbing the back of their neck. You could put one hand around the small of their back, or give their shoulders a squeeze.

An easy way to kiss more passionately is to use your hands! Hold your partner's neck, grab onto their waist, run your hands along their lower back—even just playing with their hair while you kiss will make it so much more exciting.

If you're standing up, use the nearest wall. Gently guide your partner to the wall and push them up against it in a playful and friendly way. This will drive most people absolutely nuts.

It's hard to know what to do with your eyes when you don't have a lot of kissing experience. As a rule of thumb, just keep your eyes closed when your lips are locked.
