About the Furry Fandom & Fursonas

What are furries?

  • Furries share a passion for anthropomorphism—this is a technical term for applying human traits and qualities to animals. The furry fandom (also known as furrydom) is simply a community of people who want to interact and spend time with other like-minded individuals who share the same passion for anthropomorphism.
  • The furry experience exists on a spectrum. On one end, you have people who enjoy different types of media that feature anthropomorphic characters, like the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. On the other part of the spectrum, you have people who create their own furry persona (better known as a “fursona”) to use as a creative alias when engaging with other furries.
  • Many furries are to animals as cosplayers are to fictional characters. Cosplayers (individuals who dress up as fictional characters, often at fan conventions) tend to dress up as characters that they like and/or identify with a lot—but they don’t believe themselves to be that particular character.
    • In rarer cases, there are some individuals who don’t really identify with the human experience and identify more as a certain type of creature. These people often like to use the “otherkin” label to describe themselves.

What are fursonas?

  • Fursonas are personal anthropomorphic avatars that furries design for themselves in the community. A fursona isn’t typically a 1-to-1 replica of the person—instead, it often embodies traits that the individual strives to have.
  • Some furries dress up in fursuits of their fursona, but many don’t. You’re probably familiar with fursuits—these are the large, full-body costumes that fully transform someone into their fursona. Research shows that the majority of the furry community (around 75-85%) don’t actually own a fursuit at all.
    • People who do own fursuits tend to wear them at fan conventions and meetups.
