Windows 3.1 is a closed source, 16-bit operating environment that runs on top of MS-DOS, released 6th April 1992. It proceeded Windows 3.0 but was succeeded by Windows 95. Support was dropped as of 31st December 2001. True, the system isn't exactly state of the art these days, but if you're a curious techie or hobbyist and have a computer that can run MS-DOS, you might be looking for information about how to install it. Start with step one, below.

Installing MS-DOS

MS-DOS must be installed first or else you cannot install/use Windows 3.1. This is because Windows 3.1 is an operating environment that runs on top of MS-DOS. Any version from MS-DOS 3.1 onwards should work but this article used MS-DOS 6.22 as it is the most official up to date version of MS-DOS currently.

  • Installation may work with other versions of DOS e.g. IBM PC DOS, DR DOS or FreeDOS etc but it's not guaranteed. For more in-depth information regarding compatibility, please research the AARD code.

  • Question
Can I install Windows 3.1 on my Windows XP computer, and do I need to install MS-DOS or partition the C drive to do so?

    Top Answerer
To install Windows 3.1 on your Windows XP computer, use virtual machine software like VMware, VirtualBox, or VirtualPC 2007. This setup prevents compatibility issues and allows you to use both systems simultaneously. You need to install MS-DOS since Windows 3.1 runs on top of it, and you should partition the C drive within the virtual machine.
