The cake recipes provided in this article contain the goodness of grain and molasses, along with carrots. The cakes also include sugar and sweet treats, which makes them tasty but means that these cakes should only be served as a treat, on a special occasion such as the horse's birthday. [1]

This cake is very sticky because it's not baked. It's a good cake for children to make if they're not yet familiar with using the oven.

  1. Dice 1 or 2 carrots, add about 6 regular sized sugar cubes, and 4 to 5 crushed peppermints into the bowl.

Carrot cake (baked)

This cake will be like a normal cake, not sticky when served, as it is baked.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF/180ºC.
  2. Transfer to one bowl. [2]
    • If pureeing the carrots, cut into diced pieces before adding to the food processor.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Combine thoroughly by stirring with the spatula. If needed, you can also try mixing with your very clean fingers.
  5. Mix in the molasses gradually. The resulting mixture should feel sticky and not be runny. If it is runny, add more flour to soak up the liquid.
  6. Shape the dough in a mound or cake shape, using your hands. [3]
  7. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until it is a golden brown color. It should not feel wet, and it will be firm and slightly soft inside.
  8. Allow to cool on a wire baking rack.
  9. It's now ready to serve––be sure to sing Happy Birthday to your horse.
    • The cake must only be served in slices; do not feed the horse the cake in its entirety.

    Community Answer
It's up to you and what your horse likes to eat. If it was the biggest ingredient you should probably use it.
  • Question
Can I use some else instead of flour?
    Community Answer
Here's a quick recipe that doesn't involve flour: mix 4 cups oats with 1 cup molasses or honey. When fully mixed, shape into a cake form and use carrots for candles and slices of apple for decoration.
  • Question
Is peppermint safe for horses? Should I use human peppermint candy, or something specifically made for horses?
    Community Answer
You can give horses human peppermints. Most will enjoy them very much.

      Tips

      • Make sure to give your horse a little at a time. Feed your horse about half, then put the remainder in your refrigerator until you are going to use it again. Both cakes can also be frozen but remember to wrap well in plastic and foil, add to an airtight container and label and date it.
      • The grain cake can be very sticky; you may wish to add more grains to improve the texture.

      Warnings

      • Always wash your hands before baking because you don't want your horse to get sick.
      • Be careful that the horse doesn't eat a lot of sweets or it will get very ill. Sugar should be reserved as a rare treat, not a daily one. [4]
