What Is Picky Eating?

Picky eating is when someone has strong food preferences or aversions that limit the types of food they eat. This is mainly seen in children; however, it’s still just as common in adulthood. Picky eating is a spectrum, as one picky eater may have preferences that another doesn’t—it’s all individual. Even so, there are a few common symptoms:

  • Refusing to eat specific foods
  • Refusing to eat entire food groups
  • Refusing to eat foods based on texture or appearance
  • An unwillingness to try new foods

Picky eating can be caused by changing taste buds, anxiety, eating disorders, and mental health conditions (such as autism, OCD, and ADHD). Children and adults with this affliction may have a hard time getting the nutrients they need to thrive, especially if their preferences limit the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat. Because of this, doctors recommend that parents of picky eaters and adult picky eaters work to overcome their food aversions or find other ways to receive the necessary nutrients. This might look like hiding vegetables in chocolate muffins or taking daily vitamins.
