Use a muzzle. Go to your bathtub and get it on a harness attach a leash to the harness and get someone to hold it. Go as usual, and try to associate grooming with good things like treats. Avoid using wire combs.

Is it normal for me not to be paid when I'm being trained to groom?

In most states, you are only required to be paid for what you are certified or contracted to do. If you are certified as a groomer and groom, you should be paid groomer's wages. If you are being trained, then you aren't guaranteed wages. (You should double check in the laws in your state though.)

Can you get a grooming license if you have 8 year old felonies? I graduated cosmetology school but hey wouldn't let me take my state boards because of it. I love animals and volunteer at 2 rescues.

Get your felony expunged! Don't leave that on your record. You can apply at the court house and go in front of the judge that sentenced you and tell him why you need it sealed or expunged, or you can hire a lawyer and it will be about $800. It's easy if you have not had another serious offense since then and you tell them you can't find work to support yourself, or in this case that you are trying to secure employment. There are a million bonded felons working in schools and other places because they've had their records expunged.
