  • Question
Not enough information for a real beginner. Do you let your bait actually sit on the bottom? This part was unclear.
    Paulyoutdoors
    Community Answer
It depends on how hungry the perch is. Laying a worm on the bottom will absolutely catch perch, but it's not only limited to that particular technique. Sometimes keeping your lure/bait a foot off the bottom works well, too. Sometimes casting small soft plastics (Mister Twisters, for example) with a slow retrieve also works well.
  • Question
How big does a perch have to be to keep it?
    Community Answer
This depends on your state Game Fish & Parks regulations. You can pick up a copy of each year's guide free in a bait shop or sporting goods store, or reference on the state's website.
  • Question
Can I just put a piece of my sandwich on the hook and expect to catch a perch?
    Community Answer
No, not really. Perches are predators and sandwiches are not the best lure for them.

  • Question
What type of rod should I use for catching perch?
    Mitchell Middleton
    Community Answer
Using a spinning rod is your best bet. A rod between 6 and 7 feet is ideal, and you should choose a medium-light or medium strength rod. You could also consider an ultra-light rod. For action, a medium or medium-light is recommended. The brand is less important; choose one you prefer that fits your budget. It can range from $20 to $400.
  • Question
What is the best size hook to use for catching perch?
    Community Answer
Perch are small fish with large mouths, so a #8 or #6 hook is ideal. However, you can also catch them with larger hooks.
