Roku Express+ (Walmart exclusive) and Xbox 360 have RCA outputs that can feed the RCA inputs on a VCR and/or DVD recorder. Other streaming devices can feed recorders by using HDMI-to-RCA converter between the output of Roku, etc. and the input of recorder.

I have no trouble going from my cable TV to the Roku and back, but how do I get to the VCR with the remote control?

Use the button on the remote marked "source". Sometimes it will have a symbol instead of "source". The symbol looks like a TV screen with an arrow pushed into it. Pressing this button selects the different sources of information. For example, pushing it once puts you to HDMI 1. Push it again and you'll get HDMI 2. Push it again, you'll get AV, and so on. If you've connected your VHS player using AV connectors (sometimes known as RCA connectors), you'll be looking for the AV source.

My TCL Roku TV doesn't have a yellow plug, and my Sony DVD doesn't have an HDMI plug. Can I hook them up in any other way?

If your TV has component video connectors (green, blue, and red, usually labeled "Y", "Pb", and "Cr"), you can usually use composite equipment by connecting the yellow plug to the green plug. Also, looking through TCL's current line of Roku TVs, it appears most or all of them do support composite, with a small yellow jack labeled "AV." You just need an RCA female to 3.5mm male adapter to connect the video.
