The Arabic digits 0-9 are commonly used by Chinese speakers instead of the Chinese characters. Because of this, you can focus more on pronunciation instead of character memorization when you're first starting to learn Mandarin.

  • Question
How do I count to one hundred in Chinese?
    Community Answer
Cardinal numbers in Chinese follow an unary construct in a descending order, i.e. each number is named from the highest digit down to the lowest non-zero digit. Counting from 0 to 100 therefore consists of 2 steps, or n steps for n being the number of digits. Step 1: naming the lowest digit. 0 - ling; 1 - yi; 2 - er; 3 - san; 4 - si; 5 - wu; 6 - liu; 7 - ch'i (qi); 8 - ba; 9 - chiu (jiu). Step 2: naming the higher digit(s). 10 - shih (shi); 100 - bai. Any digits above the basic unit (0-9) are named the digit number followed by its positional value, e.g. 93 will be named "chiu(9)-shih(10)-san(3)". 100 is pronounced "yi-bai".
