  • Question
Does tie-dye work on nylon for dying?
    Community Answer
Yes, it will work well for single-color tie-dye. An experienced dyer could achieve more colors, but since you must soak the nylon in the liquid rather than squirt the dye on, it can be more challenging. If you only squirt the dye on and do not let it soak properly, then your colors may come out faint and further fade in the first wash.
  • Question
Can I use permanent or semi-permanent hair dye?
    Community Answer
Unfortunately, no. Nylon is a synthetic material, and therefore will not take any formulas created for natural fibers, such as human hair or mohair.

Try it out with the normal method detailed above, but just do it on 1 piece of yarn so you can see if it has the intended effect without potentially ruining an entire batch of yarn.
  • Question
Could this method be used on a pair of running shoes with a nylon upper?
    Sarah Battilana
    Community Answer
Definitely! Depending on what kind of material the bottom part of the shoe is made of, you may be able to dye the entire shoe, too.
  • Question
Will the dyes wash out at temperatures under 90F?
    Sarah Battilana
    Community Answer
The color probably won't be very washfast if you use a temperature that is under 150F. The heat is an essential part of getting the dye to set into the nylon item.
