One of two things happened: 1. The icon on the file shows winrar, winzip or 7zip, so you think it's downloaded as a zip file. In this case, right click on the file and go to properties. If the file's extension shows a '.zip', then follow steps for case 2. Otherwise, if you don't have java installed, then install java. Right click on that file again to 'Open With' java. 2.Either the downloading software or you changed its extension to a .zip while saving the file when browsing out the download directory. In this case, you have to redownload or fake it. Drag the file to the browser or downloader's window, and make sure you enter the right extension.

A jar file is an installer. It natively runs with Java. Instead of just running it with some random jar extractor, download Java, then right click the .jar file and then click open with. This will prompt you with a small window asking you what to open it with. If Java is not on the list, click more apps, scroll down and then click find an app on this PC. Then find the java.exe file you got when you installed Java, select it and then it should open.
