Mnemonic devices work so long as you have them actively in your mind, which means that you probably can't manage that many of them at one time. The more you practice with them, the more second nature they become. Also, personalize it. Find a way to make it apply to you. Tell a story problem in terms of yourself, your friends, your world, or your existence. The more that it makes you laugh, the more likely it is going to stick.

Staying engaged while you're studying is essential. One option is to talk yourself into liking it. The other option would be to try to find something that can relate to your own life within a passage or within a math problem and say, "I'm interested in this for this reason." You're going to be more motivated to solve it.
  • Question
I am Iranian, how can I best learn English?
    Community Answer
Take classes and, if there's one in your area, join a group of others trying to learn English. Read books and magazines written in English to help you see proper sentence construction.
  • Question
I can understand what the native speakers say, but I can't speak quickly to communicate. What should I do now for improving my speaking English?
    Donagan

All you can do is keep practicing. It's common to understand a language before learning to speak it well. Small children experience that same pattern.
  • Question
I want to speak English faster. I don't have problem with reading, writing and spelling, I just have problems with speaking, as I am slow and find it hard to remember the right words.
    Community Answer
Realize that it's fine to speak slowly and clearly when speaking a language other than your own; find a pace that suits you to get your thoughts across. It is important to expand your vocabulary so that you're not hunting for words as you speak, which will slow you down. Also, be confident and have a genuine desire to connect; if you feel anxious and only have thoughts for what you want to say, this can slow down speaking in a second language. Most of all, practice a lot!
  • Question
I'm good in writing English, but speaking is very hard. What can I do?

  • Question
I am learning English and do better some days than other days. I can read books for a little while and then I get lost. What are some things I can do to help me improve?
    Community Answer
Try writing a letter/article or any other type of writing piece and reading back through your work so see if it makes sense. If you're not sure, then ask someone else to read it, such as a teacher, brother/sister, parent, friend or anyone else who you want to be around. Make a summary of what you have read, as it would show how well you understand what you have read. Are there any words that you don't understand? If so, find the meaning and find out some synonyms as well.

  • Question
I came to the USA almost two years ago and I can't speak clearly. Last year my friends told me I'd be fluent in English within one year, but I'm still not! Why? What can I do?
    Community Answer
If generally takes much longer than one year to become fluent, especially if you start learning as an adult. Be patient and keep practicing. Be sure you're speaking English regularly and not just talking to people in your own language. Watch television, read, look up and remember new words you come across. Take a class if you can, or get a beginner's textbook and slowly go through it to learn basic grammar and vocabulary.
  • Question

    Community Answer
Read; if you get the chance, read while listening to the audio version of what you are reading.
  • Question
I forget everything I learn. What can I do?
    Community Answer
Dont stress yourself out. Be positive and practice whenever you can. Everyone understands learning a new language is difficult, so use whatever word that comes to mind when speaking (simple words are fine: e.g., eggbeater: the thing that "mix" the eggs). There is no wrong way of expressing yourself. For reading, highlight whatever book / newspaper you have trouble with and Google Translate (install the App). Its not 100% accurate, but it gets close.

Learning to speak is easier than learning to write. If you can, take a class in spoken English, and talk to native speakers whenever you are able. And yes, sure, watch and listen to English-speaking shows. To learn to write English, look for ESL or ESOL tutorials online (ESL means English as a second language). There are a lot of great, free tutorials available. Be patient with yourself as an English writer, it typically takes about seven years for full writing literacy.

Why can I write and read English, but not speak it?

That is a very common problem. It can be hard to correctly make the sounds of spoken English if your native language used very different sounds. Also, speaking requires greater speed and spontaneity; when writing, you can take your time and think about how you want to phrase something to a degree that you cannot when talking with a person in real time. Keep practicing. Listen to fluent English speakers and imitate their speech.
  • Question
I face problems when it comes to new words or vocabulary. How can I learn vocabulary fast?
    Community Answer
Learn sentences, context, and collocations, not only words. Personalize those sentences to make them silly or make them something that means something special to you. For example: You want to learn the word "eat." Learn the sentence, "If I found a hamburger in the trash, I would eat it." It is silly, and it will be easier for you to remember the target word. Look up ANKI software to help with fast memorization.
