Why isn't the letter i pronounced at the end of a word in Romanian?

There are exceptions, such as monosyllabic words (like the word "și"), when there is more than one "i" at the end of a word, or infinitive verbs ending in "i". Another exception is when the final "i" is preceded by "fl","bl","tr","cl","cr", or "dr" (like "tu afli" or "centimetri"). In most cases however, "i" is pronounced as a short "i" (marked in phonetics as /ʲ/) at the end of a word.
