    Expert Answer
The end of the funnel the fish would be able to escape from must be big enough that the fish can get in, but small enough they can't get back out. They will squeeze in if they have to, they aren't deterred by this within reason.

    Expert Answer
The size of the nails will depend on the size of lumber. As a rule of thumb, I would recommend not using anything bigger than half of the width of the lumber or anything smaller than an eighth of the width of the lumber.
  • Question
How do the fish stay in the fishing trap?
    Community Answer
The fish and other creatures will discover the wider end of the cone entrance and swim in. Then, they simply won't be smart enough to swim back to the smaller end of the cone to exit.
  • Question
How do I create a trap that will hold the fish?
    Community Answer
This method does hold the fish, as long as you make a funnel going in the trap.

    Community Answer
You could shape it as a cone, then zip tie the ends together, or you could just go buy one from your local store.
  • Question
    Can I use twine instead?
    Community Answer
Twine should work well as long as it's small enough to hold the knot and big enough that it won't snap.
  • Question
Can I catch a turtle using this trap?
    Community Answer
That depends on the width of your cone. There is a chance it will go for the bait, but your cone entrance should be small enough that a turtle wouldn't fit (but a fish would).

  • Question
How do I make a fish trap on a deserted island?
    Community Answer
Making a fish trap in the wild can be a bit of work. For the materials, reeds are the best material. If that is not readily available, try phloem or inner tree bark, as that also works well due to its flexibility. You can make cordage from stringy plants to tie the parts of the trap together. Another method is to dig a trip next to a stream or river. This requires digging a circular entrance with a middle trap space, and only breaking the entrance to the trap from the stream or river once you've build the trap. Check out online videos for making such a trap.
