Cool Animal Facts

The animal kingdom is full of wild, wacky, whimsical, and straight-up weird critters that you have to see to believe. But you better believe it! We share this planet with some seriously cool animals. Here are just a few fun animal facts to think about today:

  • Poison dart frogs have poison skin! Just one frog holds enough poison to be fatal to 100 people.
  • Male angler fish fuse to their female mates, becoming permanently attached. In exchange for fertilizing eggs, they get free food and a free ride.
  • Bower birds attract mates by building little twig-and-stick shrines adorned with cool objects they find.
  • Many fish, like clownfish, kobudai, or hawkfish , can change from male to female, or female to male.
  • Flamingoes are pink because of their diet! They eat lots of things with carotenoid pigments, which are orange, pink, red, and yellow, and those pigments permeate their bodies.
  • Chickens can live up to 18 months without a head.
  • Some snails have about 14,000 teeth.
  • Horned lizards defend themselves by shooting blood out of their eyes.
  • Cows kill more people each year than sharks.
  • Platypi have poisonous spurs on their ankles.
  • Cuttlefish can change colors in just 200 milliseconds—faster than the blink of an eye!
  • Sea otters have the most hair per square inch of any animal in the world, which helps keep them warm in chilly water.
  • When dolphins sleep, they only shut down half their brain, while the other half stays active and alert, helping them surface to breathe even while asleep.
  • Male seahorses are the ones that carry and birth fertilized eggs.
  • Sloths descend to the ground to poop and pee, but only once a week! Probably because it makes them vulnerable to predators.
  • It’s estimated that cats were domesticated 4,000 years ago, in Ancient Egypt.
