What Kind of Gamer Are You?

Every gamer has their own gaming style, and plenty of different kinds of gamers are out there! Like your favorite games, your play style might fall into a gamer “genre” or archetype, and knowing which type suits you best might help you pick the next few titles you want to explore. Read over these gaming archetypes and figure out which one suits you best!

The Social Gamer: When you pick up a video game, it’s usually because you’re around other people. Single-player games aren’t really your thing; for you, the magic of a good game is in the way they allow you to connect with the other players. From party games to multiplayer shooters and board games, you play to blow off steam with your friends.

The Mobile Gamer: Who needs a console? You don’t need fancy high-powered laptops or the latest consoles because your smartphone or tablet lets you download all the games you could ever want. You enjoy mobile gaming apps, from classics, like Tetris or Words with Friends, to newer games adapted for mobile, like Stardew Valley.

The Hardcore Gamer: For you, gaming isn’t a hobby—it’s a way of life. Out of all your friends, nobody takes gaming more seriously than you. You might have just as many online friends as you do IRL because you regularly immerse yourself in your games for hours on end. You live and breathe games and have all the latest updates, gaming gadgets, and new arrivals at any given time.

The Sensitive Gamer: You put your heart and soul into the games you play, and it’s easy for you to get emotionally invested. For that reason, you might find yourself gravitating towards story-rich games—the ones that really tug at your heartstrings. You may also have a tendency to rage-quit when a game gets too hard, but your love of gaming will usually lead you to try again sooner or later.

The Trophy Hunter: You’ll uncover every last trophy, achievement, collectible, and secret item in each game you play if it’s the last thing you do! Nothing excites you more than sniffing around a game for secrets you may have missed or checking trophies from a to-do list. Winning the game is all well and good, but if the game also has collectibles or achievements? Jackpot.

The Old-School Gamer: The bells and whistles of modern games just don’t excite you like old-school games do. You don’t need hyper-realistic graphics and immersive open worlds; simple 8-bit graphics appeal to you even more! You probably gravitate toward antique consoles like the Atari or the Sega Genesis—and you may even refuse to touch a modern game in solidarity with the old-school titles.

The Explorer: Games featuring tons of lore, deep backgrounds, and wide-open worlds speak to your soul. You want to explore every corner of the game and unlock every last piece of the story purely for the joy of discovery. You’re the kind of player who spends as much time flipping through codex pages for scraps of lore as you do exploring the game, and you love having the freedom to roam at will. Open-world RPGs and adventure games are especially appealing.

The Armchair General: You’re a strategist and a trailblazer, managing the growth of fictional civilizations through your love of strategy and simulation gaming. Things like a rich story or fast-paced combat don’t really matter to you, as you prefer a gaming experience that requires you to plan ahead and use your mind in order to beat the game.

The Casual Gamer: Out of all the archetypes, you have a fairly straightforward and easygoing approach to gaming. You enjoy playing games but don’t get obsessed or emotionally invested with whatever title you play. You’re just here for a good time; gaming is a fun hobby to return to whenever you’re bored, and that’s more than enough for you.

The Destructive Gamer: For you, the true joy of gaming is in the ability to utterly annihilate everything in your path and think up creative ways to take down your foes. Traveling to a city in Skyrim and throwing fireballs in every direction to see what’ll happen? You’ve done it. Carving a path of destruction through an online battle royale game? You’re there and enjoying every minute of it.

The Backseat Gamer: You might not be a huge gamer, but you find watching someone else play extremely entertaining! If a friend offers you the controller, your answer is probably no. But if you walk in on your friend playing a game, you’re instantly fascinated—and pepper them with questions about the plot, objectives, gameplay, and more. In short, you like games but prefer watching (and commenting) instead of playing.

The Cheater: Much like the Trophy Hunter, you like uncovering every corner of a video game and unlocking every hidden item and collectible. Unlike the Trophy Hunter, you’re more than happy to use cheat codes to do it! You might be the type of gamer to wait until you’ve already beat the game once normally before going nuts on cheat codes, or you might enter a code the first time you boot up a new game.
