More About Lightsabers in Star Wars

According to Star Wars lore, lightsabers come from kyber crystals (sometimes called lightsaber crystals or living crystals). They’re rare, force-attuned crystals that grow naturally throughout the galaxy, though young Jedi were mainly sent to the Crystal Cave on the icy planet Ilum to get their kyber. Each kyber crystal is naturally clear and colorless but takes on a color once bonded to a Force-sensitive person, reflecting the true nature of their soul.

What is the significance of each lightsaber color?

Blue: Blue lightsabers are probably the most familiar for Star Wars fans—iconic figures like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker had blue lightsabers, after all. However, blue lightsabers also have a quiet significance: Jedi who wield them are known to be especially skilled at using Force abilities, which include a wide range of powers from Force healing to life detection, soothing others’ emotions, and telekinesis. All Jedi use it in one way or another, but Jedi wielding blue lightsabers are thought to have an especially strong and instinctive connection to the Force.

Green: Green lightsabers are also quite common among Jedi (and the Star Wars movies). Jedi with green lightsabers are known for their serene energy and deeply thoughtful nature; they don’t like using violence to protect the light side and are skilled peacekeepers who understand the value of talking through problems before acting. Consulars (Jedi sages and diplomats who study the inner workings of the Force) often have green lightsabers. Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda—two very wise characters—had green lightsabers, and Luke Skywalker upgraded to a green saber after he finally mastered the Force.

Red: Red lightsabers have been corrupted by the dark side. Originally, red lightsabers were actually made from corrupted kyber crystals, but after the Jedi restricted their ability to get real kyber, the Sith figured out how to make synthetic red crystals to power their lightsabers. Unlike other lightsaber colors, which are more indicative of different personality traits, red lightsabers indicate a conscious decision to join the dark side and inflict evil upon the world.

Orange: In the Star Wars universe, rare orange lightsabers often belong to Force-sensitive individuals who have not yet committed to the light or dark side. These individuals are often called “Gray Jedi.” They have one foot on either side of the force, striking a delicate balance between the two extremes. Gray Jedi use both the light and the dark, which means they forsake the way of the Jedi and the path of the Sith. As such, they tend to be independent and unafraid to walk their own path. The only canonical wielder of an orange lightsaber so far is Cal Kestis from the Star Wars: Fallen Order video game.

Yellow: Yellow lightsabers are also quite rare in the Star Wars universe; they’re commonly associated with the Jedi Sentinels (warriors who guarded the Jedi temple in Coruscant). However, Rey Skywalker’s lightsaber was also revealed to be yellow at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker —which is why this color is now associated with strength, warmth, energy, and hope. It’s also associated with practical skills, since Sentinels bridged the gap between Consulars (who specialized in diplomacy) and Guardians (who were skilled fighters).

Purple: Purple lightsabers represent the balance between light and dark. Mace Windu was the only Jedi in the Star Wars movies ever to wield a purple lightsaber, and it was because he was wise enough to understand (and resist) the temptations of the dark side, even as he kept fighting for the light. This wisdom is reflected in the lightsaber’s color (since purple is a balance between red and blue). According to Star Wars lore, the purple kyber crystals used to make purple lightsabers are also incredibly rare—as rare as those few Jedi who have a deep and profound understanding of light and darkness.

White (Silver): Ever heard the phrase “chaotic good”? That’s what a white lightsaber symbolizes: doing the right thing without the shackles of bureaucracy dragging you down. The only canonical wielder of white lightsabers in the Star Wars universe is Ahsoka Tano, a former padawan of Anakin Skywalker. She officially left the Jedi because she was unsatisfied with their rules but also wholly rejected the dark side. Thus, Ahsoka’s twin lightsabers turned white, a symbol that she had rejected the status quo and embraced autonomy but remained dedicated to the light side and doing good in the world.
