5 Ways to Prepare for a Piercing:

  • Make sure you’re old enough. Depending on your state and piercing choice, you may need to be 18 years of age. Most ear piercings are fine for all ages, but for body piercings, you’ll probably need your parent’s consent if you’re underage (in some states, you’ll need it for tongue piercings, too!).
  • Go to a professional. When you get a piercing, sterile tools and a sterile environment are an absolute must. Though you can technically pierce yourself at home (and if you do, you should be extremely careful), it’s best to use a professional to limit the risk of infection.
  • Avoid the piercing gun. Though they may look like a less painful option, piercing guns can actually cause tissue damage if used incorrectly. They’re also a less hygenic option, which means your risk of infection goes up.
  • Consider going alone. Clutching your friend’s hand might sound nice in theory, but in reality, their nerves might rub off on you! While waiting in anticipation to get their piercing, many people report that other people’s anxious energy actually made them feel less relaxed in the chair.
  • Eat beforehand. By consuming a hearty meal first, you’ll build up your strength before your piercing. This way, you’re less likely to feel dizzy or lightheaded when you see that needle.

Pain. Before you get your piercing, you may be wondering just how painful that needle is going to be. Some (cartilage, nipple) are known to be more painful than others (lobe, tongue). But on the whole, the experience is totally different from person to person.

Cleaning & Care. Different piercings require different care regimens, but in general, you should expect to follow a careful, daily plan. That’s another benefit of going to a professional—they’ll walk you through everything you need to know to avoid risk of infection.

Infection. When you get a new piercing, you’ll have to look out for signs of infection. Specifically, the skin around your piercing might be swollen, bright red, very dark, or hot to the touch.
