Voltron Trivia

Big personalities piloting even bigger robots. What’s not to love? You probably know the series by its 2016 Netflix adaptation, which made quite the splash for a number of reasons, but Voltron has been around much longer than that, and it’s a franchise with a whole lot of history. So here’s some fascinating Voltron facts you might not have known!

  • The franchise began all the way back in 1984 with the show Voltron: Defender of the Universe. But even that series was based on another franchise. Two, in fact: Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV, which were both anime series.
  • Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV were actually completely unrelated! Voltron: Defender of the Universe was created by mashing the two together with heavy edits and revisions to make something almost entirely new.
  • Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender is actually the fourth Voltron show in the franchise.
  • Voltron: Legendary Defender was created by many of the same people who made Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
  • Like many shows about big robots fighting each other, the creators took a whole lot of inspiration from the Gundam series which, while not the first series ever to show big robots, is often considered the godfather of big robot shows. The Gundam series, like Voltron , has many different chapters, entries, and adaptations, which are still being created today!
  • The original Voltron series had to be heavily edited for American broadcasting, and they weren’t allowed to show humans dying. For this reason, some characters that died in the original, like Sven (who was the inspiration for Shiro), actually survive in the American version!
