Roblox is one of the most popular gaming platforms. It allows you to create and play different experiences made by other players. Roblox is a great place to create and explore the creativity of others, as well as meet new friends. This wikiHow article teaches you how to play Roblox.

Quick Guide to Playing Roblox

Sign up for an account at the Roblox website and customize your Avatar. Download the App to browse experiences. Select an experience and click the play icon. Use the WSAD keys to move and the spacebar to jump. Right-click and drag to adjust the camera. Left-click to use tools and interact with items.

  1. Roblox is available for most devices. You can download the Roblox app and sign up for an account at Roblox.com . You can also download the Roblox app for Android from the Google Play Store, or for iPhone from the App Store. Roblox is also available on PlayStation 4 and 5 from the PlayStation Store and Xbox One and Series X/S from the Microsoft Store.
    • If you’re using Roblox on your computer, you can sign up and manage your account on roblox.com . However, you’ll need to download the Roblox Player to actually play games. You should be prompted to install the Roblox Player on your computer automatically the first time you launch a game.
  2. To do so, go to Roblox.com or open the Roblox app. Click or tap Sign Up . Enter your birthday, a unique username, a password, and optionally, select your gender. Then click or tap Sign Up . That’s all you need to do. [1]
    • After creating an account, it is highly recommended that you secure your account. To do so, click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner or tap More on the mobile app. Go to Settings and select Account Info . Enter a valid email address or phone number and verify it with a one-time password.
    • You don't need to be a certain age to play Roblox. If you want to view social items, though, you must be over 13.

  3. Your avatar is the character you play in Roblox. You will use the same avatar in all Roblox experiences. You can customize your avatar as well as purchase clothing and accessories for it.
    • To customize your avatar , click the icon with three lines (☰) in the upper-left corner and then click Avatar , or tap Avatar at the bottom of the mobile app. Click or tap one of the tabs at the top of the page and select items for your avatar. The tabs are Characters , Clothing , Accessories , Head & Body , and Animations .
    • To purchase more items for your avatar, click or tap Marketplace at the top. Search for specific items or filter items by type. You can purchase clothing, accessories, head and body types, and more. Avatar items and in-game purchases are done using Robux , which is Roblox’s digital currency. Click Buy Robux at the top to purchase Robux.
  4. To do so, click the Gear icon in the upper-right and then click Settings . Here you can find options to view your account info, change your security settings, add content restrictions, add a payment method, and more. The following are some of the options in the Settings menu that you might want to check out:
    • Account Info: This is where you can change your view and change your account info, such as your username, password, email, phone number, gender, and language, and add social media accounts.
    • Security: Here, you can change your security settings, such as enabling 2-Step Verification (highly recommended), and checking which devices you are signed into.
    • Privacy & content restrictions: Here you can change your privacy settings, including your online status visibility and account visibility. You can also add content restrictions and screen time limitations, or restrict communication with other players.
    • Notifications: Here, you can enable push notifications on your mobile device, enable email notifications, and select which experiences you want to receive notifications about.
    • Payment methods: Here, you can add credit cards, debit cards, and other payment methods used to buy Robux.
    • Subscriptions: Here, you can view all your subscriptions, including your Roblox Premium subscription and subscriptions to individual experiences.
    • Parental Controls: If you want to add parental controls to a child’s Roblox account, you will need to create a parent account and link it to your child’s account. Then you can use this menu option to enable parental controls on your child’s account.
    • App permissions: Here, you can select which third-party applications are allowed to access your Roblox account.
  5. You’ll need the Roblox Player app to play games on desktop. Go to the Roblox home page in a web browser to see a list of experiences you can play. Click an experience and then click the Play button. The first time you launch an experience, you will be prompted to download and install the Roblox player . Download the installation file and then double-click the installation file in your Downloads folder. Follow the prompts to install it. [2]
    • If you have the Roblox app on your mobile device or game console, you’re all set. You don’t need to download another application.

Gameplay Basics

  1. Press W or the up arrow key to move you forward, A or the left arrow key to move you to the left, S or the down arrow key to move you backward, and D or the right arrow key to move right. The space bar lets you jump. [3]
    • On mobile devices, tap and drag the stick icon in the lower-left corner to move forward, backward, left, or right. Tap the up arrow in the lower-right corner to jump.
    • On game consoles, use the left analog stick to move forwards, backwards, left or right. Press X (on PlayStation) or A (on Xbox) to jump.

    • On mobile devices, tap and drag on the right side of the screen to move the camera.
    • On game consoles, use the right analog stick to adjust the camera.

    Hold ⇧ Shift to sprint. You can move faster by holding Shift as you walk.

    Interact with objects. Different experiences offer different things you can interact with. Generally, you can interact with an object by standing in front of it and pressing E or left-clicking it. On mobile devices, tap the object you want to interact with. [5]
    • If you are playing on a game console, press Square or Y , use the right trigger button, or press whichever button is assigned to interactions.
    • Some experiences may have the button controls mapped differently. In this case, press the button displayed on screen to interact with an object.

    Use tools and weapons. Some experiences allow you to equip tools and weapons. You can generally pick up a weapon by standing in front of it and pressing E or tapping it. Left-click to use a weapon. Some games allow you to carry multiple items. Press the hotkey assigned to an item to select it (it’s usually the number keys).
    • On mobile devices, tap the button assigned to a tool or weapon to use it, or tap the item on screen you want to use the tool or weapon on. If you are carrying multiple items, tap the button assigned to an item to select it.
    • On game consoles, use the right trigger button to use a tool or weapon. Use the right and left bumper buttons to select items.
  6. Most worlds start with ladders already in them. Walk toward a ladder using the W or up arrow key and your character will automatically start climbing up it.

    Click the speech bubble to chat over text. It’s in the upper-left corner. This enables the in-game chat where you can interact with other players in the experience.

    Click the microphone icon for voice chat. It’s in the upper-left corner. This enables voice chat.
    • You must be 13 or older to use Voice Chat and have it enabled in your Account Settings page.

Viewing Other Players

    Click the icon with three lines ☰ . It’s in the upper-right corner. This opens the Game menu.

    Start a party. If you want to start a party with players you know, click Party in the game menu. The click Start party . Select the players you want to create a party with and click Start .

    Enable self view. Self view allows you to control your avatar’s movements using your webcam. To enable this, click Self View in the game menu and click the camera icon to enable your webcam. Click the camera icon again to disable self view.

    Take screenshots and video captures. Click Capture in the game menu to take a screenshot of your game. To make a video recording, press Esc to open the Roblox menu. Then click the Capture tab at the top. Click Record to start recording. Click Stop in this menu to stop recording.
    • By default, your game capture files can be found in the “Roblox” folder in your “Pictures” folder.

    View what music is playing. If you like the music that is playing in the game, and you want to know what it is, click Music in the game menu to see what the music is.

    Report the experience or a person. If you want to report something, click Report in the game menu. Select if you want to report a person or the experience. If you want to report the experience, it will give you the option to take a video recording of the inappropriate material. If you are reporting a person, you’ll need to select the player, what type of abuse you’re reporting, and the reason for the abuse. You can then provide a brief explanation of what happened. Click Submit to file a report.

    View the leaderboard. If you want to view the top scores in your experience, click Leaderboard in the game.

    Emote with your avatar. There are various animations you can use to emote with your Avatar. To use an emote, click Emote in the game menu and then click the animation you want to use or press the number key that corresponds to that emote.

    View your inventory. You can purchase various items from the marketplace that can be used in experiences (depending on the type of experience). Click Inventory in the game menu to view your inventory. Click and drag items to the hotkey slots. Press the number key associated with an inventory item to equip it and use it.

    Open the Roblox menu. To do so, press Esc or click the Roblox icon in the upper-right corner.

    Click the Settings tab. It’s the second tab at the top of the page.

    Set your camera mode. The two modes you can use are Classic and Follow. Classic mode has the camera remain fixed in one spot unless you manually adjust it. You change your vantage point by holding down the right button on your mouse and dragging. Follow mode has the camera follow your character as you move right and left. In follow mode, you turn by dragging the mouse button. [6]
    • Enable Shift Lock to switch between camera modes by pressing the Shift button.
    • You may want to try different camera modes for different experiences. For example, a speed running platform game may be easier in follow mode, while an adventure game may be better in classic mode.

    Select your movement mode. By default, the movement mode is “Keyboard + Mouse.” You can also select “Keyboard” or “Click to Move.”
    • Some experiences may play better using different movement options. For example, a role playing game may play better with Click to Move enabled.

    Adjust the maximum frame rate. The frame rate is how many frames per second (FPS) the game renders. A higher frame rate allows for smoother animation and motion and better responsiveness. However, the maximum frame rate will be limited by your computer’s hardware. If you don’t have a high-end computer with high-speed GPU, you probably won’t be able to render 240 FPS.

    Adjust the experience language. Use the drop-down menu next to “Experience Language” to select your preferred language. Then use “Automatic Chat Translation” to select if you want to automatically translate comments in the chat that are written in another language. Use the drop-down menu next to “Automatic Translation Language” to select what language you want automatic chat translation to translate to. Then you can toggle the option to view untranslated messages on or off. When it is toggled off, you will not see untranslated messages.

    Adjust the camera sensitivity. Click the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons next to “Camera Sensitivity" to adjust how quickly the camera moves.

    Adjust the volume and audio output. Use the drop-down menu next to “Output device” to select what audio output device (i.e., speakers, headphones) you want to use. Then click the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons next to volume to adjust the audio volume.

    Turn haptics on or off. Haptics are controller vibration. If you are playing with a game controller, you can enable or disable haptics.

    Turn full screen on or off. If you are using a computer, you can turn full screen on to play the game using your entire screen. Turning full screen off will allow you to play inside of a window.

    Adjust the game graphics. Set graphics mode to “Automatic” to allow Roblox to set the best graphics settings for your hardware. If you want to set your graphics quality manually, set this option to manual. Then click the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons next to “Graphics quality” to adjust the texture quality and draw distance of the game.

    Turn reduced motion on or off. If you are prone to motion sickness, you may want to enable “Reduced motion” to reduce the motion speed and effects.

    Adjust the background transparency. Clicking the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons next to “Background Transparency” adjusts how see-through the background of the chat and various interfaces are.

    Enable or disable UI navigation. When UI navigation is turned on, you can press the “\” button to enter UI navigation mode. This will allow you to navigate the user interface using the WSAD or arrow keys. You can turn this option on or off in the settings.

    Show your computer’s performance stats. Enable “Performance Stats” to view your CPU, GPU, and internet connection speeds. Enable the MicroProfiler to view a graph of your framerate in real time.

    Enable or disable inverted camera. If you prefer to play with the camera inverted (flight controls), you can enable it in the Settings menu.

    Enable or disable VR. If you have a VR headset, you can enable VR for experiences that support it in the Settings menu.
