  • Question
If I start a spiritual life, is it necessary for me to stop having a sexual relationship with my wife? Is having sexual desire in a spiritual life good or bad?
    Community Answer
No, you don't need to stop your sexual relationship with your wife - you're married! The very strict spiritual paths that don't allow sex also do not allow marriage. Plenty of married people have fulfilling spiritual and sexual lives - otherwise no religious families would have any children. Sexual desire for your partner is not bad. Consult a leader of your faith if you are concerned about various sexual behaviors, or extramarital or premarital sexual desires - different groups have different ideas about these issues.

Make sure you have a handle on your strengths and weaknesses and your spiritual goals before raising the topic. Being able to honestly evaluate and articulate where you think you're at will make for a better, more authentic conversation.

It's normal to get angry sometimes, so your expectations for yourself may be unrealistic. That said, if you feel that anger is a problem for you, start to explore what, exactly, makes you so angry in various situations where you think anger isn't warranted? Is it lack of control over circumstances or other people? Disappointments when your expectations aren't met? Through prayer and counseling and self-reflection, you might get to the root of your anger and begin to experience more victory over it.

  • Question
I'm a student in relationship. Will having sex affect my spiritual life? It has been confusing me, since my partner can't wait until marriage without doing it.
    Tom De Backer
    Top Answerer
You can do whatever you want. Don't let anyone pressure you into having sex if you don't want to. If they threaten to leave the relationship, that's not fair of them. Sex will definitely affect your spiritual life. But in a positive sense. It is a passionate, intimate and intense experience, not just physically, but mentally as well. The intimacy can lead to a deeper trust between you two, strengthening your relationship and giving you peace of mind. But if you want to save sex until after you're married, do so. Or get married.

    Community Answer
Try to think about the things that make you laugh when you feel negative. You probably won't laugh in the moment, but you'll probably smile. Think about jokes you've heard and how corny they are. Think about the people who make you happy. To free yourself from negative thoughts, have positive thoughts. Or at least try. Smiling also automatically makes you feel happy, try it!
