  • Question
Can I set up as LLC under a Host?
    LINDA HOPKINS
    Community Answer
I learned you should not be LLC as an independent contractor for a host agency, because your E and O policy under host agency will not cover you. Get EIN as sole proprietor, not your personal SSN. Later you can incorporate if you choose, but this is the problem free, lower cost, better protection way to get things going smoothly.
  • Question
Can my certificate come from working under an agent?
    Community Answer
There is no nationally recognized certifying body for travel agents like there is for accountants, for example. Each agency "certifies" their agents. So "certifications" are not transferable. If you find someone telling you they can "certify" you as a travel agent for the industry, I would be wary.
  • Question
How do you find host travel agencies?
    Community Answer
You can simply google "host travel agency" to find individual companies, or add the word "review" to your search to find forums that that review and compare companies.
  • Question
How much of a discount do travel agents get off cruises?
    Community Answer
You will obviously receive your commission back. Some cruise lines also send you on a cruise as part of your final curriculum. Most lines will offer specials for travel agents, but everyone is different.
  • Question
How do I find out which agency has the lowest start-up fees?
    Community Answer
Unfortunately, you just need to shop around. Some are very low cost, but they offer very little support for a new travel agent. As with anything, you pay for what you get. The commissions paid are also tricky, and you really can't compare percentages to percentages because some agencies receive a higher commission from the vendor before they pay you.
  • Question
What is the average income of a new travel agent?
    Community Answer
This type of job can have a wide range of salary. The highest 10% makes more than $59,000 per year while the lowest 10% makes less than $19,000 per year. The average take home of new travel agent will be around $23,000 a year. Once you you grow the business you will end up with an average of around $32,000 or more depending on your business.
