Take two gifts - an expensive one, and a small, cheap one. Once you're there, notice what everyone else did. If there's a table lined with small goodies, give the host the small, cheap gift. If there are big presents, give her the expensive one. If there are no presents, keep/return the gifts. Another option is to make a donation in their name to a charity you know they'd support and let them know about it.
