In my experience, I came down from a 9/16 gauge by leaving the jewelry out until it stopped shrinking. Then I gauged up again for a couple hours and took it out to shrink again. I'm down to a 0 now.

You run a risk of it not closing completely when you reach any size after 2g. Some people see their ears close at 0g, but it's not guaranteed. It also depends on how you treated your ears during, after, and between each stretch. Skipping sizes, not waiting long enough between sizing up, and not cleaning and moisturizing your ears can all decrease your chances of them ever closing properly.
