The yarn or thread thickness doesn't matter too much. Just make your beginning chain as wide as you would like your bag to be.
  • Question
What's the name of the bag I can crochet and then wash to "set" it?

When you say "set" it, do you mean to "felt" the bag? If I understand the question, you need to make the bag from wool. Use very hot water & "rub" the bag a lot. (I am talking about an extreme amount of rubbing.) By hand: use gloves, towels (two or more dishtowels), and a large wooden spoon. Make sure the water is hot but NOT boiling! Stir, rub, squish, squeeze, etc.; the fibers must "tangle." By machine: same concept, but use several "bath" towels. And yes, it will shrink!

I tried making a bag but instead, it started curling. What should I do now?

Check back to see whether you have been losing stitches, or your project isn't straight. Maybe you should take it out and try again. And this time, try using stitch markers and mark wherever you left off. If it continues to curl, then just continue making it and create a border at the end.
