I've heard working helps, but I've never been able to successfully keep it around once it appears.

The only way to improve is through practice and studying your techniques. Try recording yourself to see if you can identify any weak spots. But most of all, like anything, you'll improve the more you practice.

Drop it, slide it into your pocket, or slide it down your sleeve or the back of your shirt, which should be tucked in to prevent it falling out and onto the ground.

Do more practice and/or find a less slippery nickel, and use glue to stick it to the dollar if necessary (but don't give it to your audience to inspect if you do that).
