  • Question
Are there hair types that look like they are evil?
    Community Answer
You could use the shadow of the hair to fall over the eyes giving it a gloomy look. Spiked hair can look evil sometimes. Slicked, oily hair can give the impression of being greasy in character as well as in hair. Check out cartoon character and movie villains for an idea of what might work.
  • Question
Why do I need to draw the head?
    Community Answer
It is not exactly necessary, but solely drawing hair floating in the air is an image which is rarely drawn. Even for the purpose of practicing how to draw hair you should draw it with head so you get a feeling how hair, face, eyes and so on work together, so that your "real" drawings have a realistic and good looking outcome.
  • Question
What are some mistakes people commonly make with the hair?
    Community Answer
It's your choice what you want the hair to look like, there is no right or wrong. One thing you might want to look out for is not making the hair too flat, try to emulate human hair. Human hair has volume.
  • Question
How do you know if the hair is flowing the right way? Sometimes when I draw the hair, it looks like it blows one way, but then other strands are blowing the other way.

    Community Answer
Stand by a mirror, get your blow dryer or a fan, and test it out. Observe how your hair is blowing. If you have short hair, ask a friend or family member to stand in.
  • Question
How can I learn to draw hair blowing in the wind and a girl crying?
    sayyida rania
    Community Answer
Draw the hair going backwards, and the girl's tears could also blow in the wind.
  • Question
Does the hair have to be flowing a certain direction?
    Community Answer
You can have your hair flow however you want. Look at anime/manga characters for reference.
  • Question
What is the importance of the hairline?
    Community Answer
It's just where the hair starts. If you're drawing a character with bangs, where their hairline is not seen, you don't necessarily have to draw it - but it could help you get a clearer idea of the proportions of their face if you draw it and then erase it.
  • Question
How do you change spiky hair to curly hair?
    Community Answer
Changing from one type to another would be quite difficult because of the sharp lines that make anime so distinctive. It would be best to erase the spiky hair and then start over with curly hair.

    sayyida rania

Use a pointed pencil to get lighter strokes on the hair to get more details.

    Community Answer

How would I draw Emo hair?
    jakub stach
    Community Answer
Try the typical "helmet" haircut most Anime guys have. Literally 99.9% of Anime guys have the same haircut. It just looks so cool and menacing.
  • Question
What software or program should I use?
    Community Answer
Some people use Photoshop, but I recommend Gimp or PaintTool SAI. Gimp is good for beginners, and PaintTool SAI is the best software for coloring/touching up your art work that I have found.
  • Question
How do I draw the details and where do I add them?
    Community Answer
Try drawing reflective streaks on the edges of the hair and try imagining where the light is coming from so you can add shadows.

Long bangs are pretty common in manga and are feminine. You may also draw long, flowing locks.
  • Question
How do I draw details into the simple sketch?

You can draw the simple hair, and then you can draw small, thin strands outside the larger strands, and then add extra lines on the hair. You'll get better at it the more you practice. Look at reference material to help.
  • Question
How do I start the hair?
    Community Answer
Personally, I would start of with a flat top. Later on, I would add more details to make the hair longer. If it is a boy's hair, then I would make it short and spiky.
  • Question
What hair style is more attractive for males?
    Community Answer
    Mohawks.
  • Question
How do I draw anime hair covering one eye?
    Ella_puppies
    Community Answer
First off, make bangs. Lightly conceal the eye, but make sure it's not too bold. Draw light hair strands, if you'd like, to give it a "shaggy but sharp" appearance. Make sure to never make just one slab of hair overlap one whole eye. That will make the hairstyle look too bold and too sloppy. Remember to gently cover the eye, but it looks nice to have a portion of the eye showing as well. If you don't want the character to have bangs, make a lock of hair slip gracefully sideways and gently conceal the eye.
  • Question
What if I have trouble drawing the details in the hair?
    Community Answer
YouTube has a number of tutorials that can help.
  • Question
Do you know how to make it look like a girl is mad and crying at the same time? Every time I try, I mess up.
    Community Answer
Draw the usual angry eyebrows/eyes and make them curve up ever so slightly, then make her frown. Add some tears in her eyes/on her cheeks.
  • Question
Where should I put the extra lines?
    Community Answer
Add lines where you want to show more hair. For example, you may add lines near the top of the head to indicate extra volume.
  • Question
How do I know what type of brush strokes to use on which bits of hair?
    Community Answer
In my opinion, it depends on the direction you've drawn the hair, so I would say follow the direction you have made your hairstyle flow.
  • Question
What can I do to make the hair seem thicker and fuller?
    Community Answer
Try making the hair look blockier, and don't add as much detail.
  • Question
How do I draw an anime boy with a ponytail and wearing a golf cap?
    Nisska Gowrie
    Community Answer
First, know what type of ponytail you want and what it's alignment to the head will be. Are there any loose strands of hair? Does he have bangs? Sketch out the hair first, but don't erase the guidelines. Later, using the guidelines, you can sketch out a golf cap.
  • Question
Does the hair need to have an accessory?
    Community Answer
Not always. An accessory is just to give it some “pizzazz” and make it look a little nicer.
