  • Question
Would a Dri-Z-Air work for drying walnuts, or would they become over dry?
    Community Answer
This would be fine. I turn on my oven to 170, turn it off and put the nuts in for 5-minute shifts. This helps to speed the drying.
  • Question
Some of the nuts I am drying are getting mold on them. Will it hurt the nuts, or does that just mean they are still wet and need to dry more?
    Community Answer
They may have some husk residue or moisture on them. You can put them in the oven at 170 degrees for 5 minutes to cook off the residue and excess moisture. If you limit the time to 5 minutes, you wont cook the nut meat.
  • Question
How long can I keep walnuts in the shell?
    Community Answer
The standard answer is 1 - 2 years in a cool, dark place. However, I have a batch of walnuts in a wire basket on my kitchen counter that are at least 8 years old, and they still look and taste wonderful when I crack them.
  • Question
Can walnuts be dried in the oven?
    Community Answer
Yes. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F. Spread the walnuts in a single layer on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for about 15 minutes, then let cool for an hour.
  • Question
How do I sell my black walnuts? Who will buy them?
    Community Answer
One company buying black walnuts is Hammons, they generally buy them while they're still in a green shell though. black-walnuts.com/discover-harvesting-and-hulling/hulling-and-buying-locations/ is a link to being able to find their buying locations. Otherwise, ask around at farmers' markets or local bakeries and confectioneries.
