I don't really get the last part of complex shapes, care to explain?

If you're asking about Method 7, Step 4, to the area we're trying to calculate (a trapezoid in this case) we add an extra shape, an easy-to-calculate triangle. That forms another easy-to-calculate shape, a square. From that we subtract the new area we added. That leaves the area we actually want.
