  • Question
I lost my Shih Tzu but got another one. I am in doubt he is a true Shih Tzu because his eyes are small compared to the eyes of the one I lost. Does every Shih Tzu have large eyes, or is my new Shih Tzu a different breed?
    Top Answerer
Shih Tzu are known for their large, impressive eyes. It's possible for one to have slightly smaller eyes than another, but if you're doubting his breed, consider using a DNA test to see if he is a true Shih Tzu.
  • Question
Do Shih Tzu have split tongues?
    Top Answerer
Shih Tzu may have long, hanging tongues, but a dog should not have a split tongue. Take the dog to the vet immediately if it has a split tongue.
  • Question
Can some Shih Tzu puppies have a slightly longer snout?
    Top Answerer
A Shih Tzu's muzzle is described as short and square with a flat front, and it is typically only one inch in length. It is possible for it to be slightly longer in certain dogs, but this is not common. If a dog has a noticeably longer muzzle or snout than this, it is probably a mixed breed or another breed of dog.
  • Question
Why are my Shih Tzu's ears so small?
    Top Answerer
Though most Shih Tzu have fairly large ears, they may vary in size depending on the individual. The ears may also appear smaller or larger depending on the dog's haircut. If you are concerned about their ears, consult a veterinarian.
  • Question
My shih tzu is a beautiful bluish silver color - is this a "blue" coat? Is it rare? She was mostly black with small patch of white on her chest when we got her but is now about 1 1/2 years old.
    Top Answerer
The coat color description could be either silver or blue. Blue coats aren't necessarily rare but are caused by a diluted gene in the dog and are truly a diluted black color. It would make sense if she is this color as her black coat faded a bit with age.
  • Question
My shih tzu's teeth hang out of his mouth. Is this normal for this breed?
    Top Answerer
Shih tzu are a rather flat-faced breed, and this, combined with their small size, makes them more prone to having an underbite than some other dogs. Underbites are quite common in shih tzu and rarely require treatment; however, if the bite appears overly misaligned or causes problems with chewing, consult a veterinarian.
  • Question
Do shih tzu have pink noses?
    Top Answerer
Most shih tzu have black noses, but, depending on their coat color, their nose may also be blue or liver. A liver nose may resemble a shade of pink. It's also possible for a black nose to temporarily turn pink seasonally due to changes in temperature.
  • Question
How long should a shih tzu be?
    Top Answerer
The average adult shih tzu is around 15-18 inches (38.1-45.7 centimeters) long.
  • Question
Is there really a Japanese shih tzu? I've been told my dog is not a true shih tzu.
    Top Answerer
The shih tzu are a Tibetan and Chinese breed; they did not originate in Japan. It's possible that your dog may be a Japanese chin or a Jatzu (a mix between a shih tzu and a Japanese chin).
