A "maw" is a much heavier splitting tool. (Normally they're 7.5 lbs. vs. an ax which is 3 to 4 lbs.) It's angle of attack is much more flat than that of an ax. It requires less of a swing to chop smaller pieces; it's normally used for splitting wider logs.
