Snails make more waste than fish, so 1" of snail needs more than 1 gallon of water; the bigger the tank and the more frequent the water changes, the closer that ratio gets to 1" per gallon. For tanks 10 gallons or less, I'd say 1" of snail per 2 gallons, assuming infrequent water changes. The less filtration, the more water is necessary per "inch" of snail. Because different systems, different species interact differently.
