Watch your puppy from a distance so that they think they're alone. Then, you can see what's making your dog upset, such as loud noises or other animals or people in the area. You can better handle the problem when you're sure of what's causing it.

A brand new puppy at home for the first time will often cry for the first few nights, but then should stop. Be careful not to go to the puppy when actively crying, as this makes them think you can be 'called' and makes the crying go on for longer.

If the puppy is playful at night, then he needs more exercise during the day. Make a point of playing with him regularly, and try not to let him sleep during the evening, so he's tired at bedtime. Then have a set bedtime routine where all the signals are "It's time to sleep now." This includes making the room quiet, dimming the lights, and talking to him only in a soft sleepy voice.

Hard as it is, don't make a big fuss about leaving. Instead, ignore the dog and just go. However, try to give the dog fewer clues you are about to go by shaking up your leaving routine. Do things such as wearing a coat instead of a dressing gown (so the dog doesn't see 'coat' and automatically think 'Mom's going out'), wear shoes in the house, and pick up and put down your car keys when you are staying in. Then try leaving by a different door. If the dog has severe separation anxiety issues, then seek the help of a certified animal behaviorist.

Make sure puppy is pleasantly tired at bedtime and has relieved himself. If puppy isn't crate trained, then think about doing this, to give him his own night-time den. Have a sleepy low key bedtime routine, such as dimming the lights, turning off the TV, and making the place peaceful. Then pop puppy in his crate. Leave the room. If he cries, ignore him. Only re-enter the room when he's not crying. If he's safe and doesn't need to relieve himself, then he wants your presence and your return makes it seem like he called you, which makes matters worse. Be prepared for him to cry for hours...but eventually, he'll learn and stop.
  • Question
What are your suggestions for the scratching at the door in the morning when the puppy wakes up before us?
    Community Answer
Don't give in. If you do, you dog will continue to scratch for attention. This is something he will outgrow.
  • Question
What about the scratching at night when it's time for bed?
    Ruth Everington
    Community Answer
The best thing to do is not to give in. If every time your puppy scratches, you go to him, he will continue doing the same thing every night for attention. This is a phase he will outgrow. Plenty of play time before bed should tire him out, an evening walk or run.
  • Question
My puppy cries all night when I leave him in the cage, but today he is crying more than often. What can I do?
    99WikiHolic99
    Community Answer
This may seem really harsh, but you just have to ignore him. If you want the results to be really good then he has to understand that no matter how much noise he makes, he just has to settle down and go to sleep.
  • Question
How do I keep my dog from whining whenever I go near his crate?
    Lily Castleberry
    Community Answer
Put something he likes in there, and let him go in. Do not close it on him, let him go in and out as he pleases. Do this until he feels completely comfortable around his crate. Reward him whenever he goes in all by himself. However, realize he may be whining because he is happy to see you.
  • Question
Should I leave my puppy outdoors when I am away, if it prefers it?
    Community Answer
No. The puppy could run away, get injured, get stolen, or worse. It is better to keep the puppy indoors while you aren't home so that it stays safe. If you are home and can watch it, it's perfectly fine!
  • Question

  • Question
Why might my dog be whining and barking when out on a walk and someone walks past us?
    Community Answer

  • Question
How do I stop my puppy from howling and barking at night in a crate?
    Community Answer
Most dogs don't like small spaces. It is best to put the dog in a bigger space so it has room and doesn't feel trapped.
  • Question
How do I take care of a puppy if I'm in school?
    Community Answer
You can crate train the dog, but you will still need to have someone come and let it out at some point during the day. You can't keep a dog inside for more than a few hours without letting it out, especially not a puppy. If your parents can't let the dog out, you'll have to hire a dog walker.
