I see the new users trying to become cool contributors but failing miserably.Not all ! I was thinking we have a bot to welcome new users then why can’t we little upgrade it.What I meant is this --The new users will be sent new tips to contribute daily or on timely basis THROUGH BOT.(Tips will help improve them a lot)(plus we will send them tips based on their best field of contribution as its always good to be good in your field rather then trying to accomplish unknown things) or if the idea somehow lags then we can have a fact sheet or general questions that a newcomer should know about contributing.
Hmm, nice idea, however, they can take the tour. And, they’re new, they need to learn from their mistakes. Plus, it could get confusing every day to get new tips, I think it would be better to find a mentor/tutor or just ask for someone’s help. =) June Days
Finding mentor is difficult as everyone has so much work to do. Personally mentoring is not required where in talk pages get filled with so much of thanking and questioning plus its annoying.
No one gets confused unless a vague or wrong idea. We can feed a few awesome and universal tips to help and boost them. And about tours they are obviously needed before we can start giving them tips.
However, it will get confusing to the new user. That’s why we took away the welcome links, to help new users not get overrun with info, the tour simply explains it. Plus, the person who welcomes the User is free to help. We’re all here to help with anything uses may need. Also, new contributors don’t have to contribute on a daily basis. It’s a wiki…Anyone can edit at any time they want. And, there are some excellent new uses who, as little as I’ve seen, 16 hours, who have made great contributions. =) June Days
But the People can’t always be online at the same time as there mentors and vice versa. If its the case of daily tips then we can change it to whenever the user logins , they will get a new tip.For example Welcome back User123, Your last logins contributions were great ! Todays tip : Always open the articles in a new tab before you put a image on them through image picker. Get a jest of the article and then search for the image.
I appreciate the fact that you want to help new wikiHowians make productive contributions. I have some (hopefully) constructive feedback though. I think tips are a good idea, but that wikiHowians (I hate the term “users”) should have a choice of whether or not they get daily tips. Some people do not want to be contacted every day. I wouldn’t, because I don’t always like being contacted by bots right when I log into a site. wikiHow did have a tip of the day thing (I think it may just have been for userpages, but correct me if I’m wrong – this was a while ago) and maybe we should bring it back to a more prominent place on the site. If people wanted daily tips, maybe there’s a way they could opt-in to it. Another idea would be periodic follow-up messages for new wikiHowians based on how many times they’ve edited, to see if they have any more questions or want help in order to achieve specific goals.
@Elocina
The bots will contact to give the user a feedback and a tip based on their performance results.You might not like getting tips everyday because you already know everything but believe me giving tips is trend which makes users to come daily and check for there performance statistics and contribute more in a positive way. Your last point is also a support answer !
^ Exactly. Plus, every single new user will get tips for the rest of their wikiHow-lives. I think asking a person for tips from an experienced User (instead of a bot) is the best. Just MHO.
Then they can wait until someone gets on. =) June Days
Details need a bit of tweaking, but this sounds like a reasonable suggestion. If used properly, it might even point vandals in the right direction. Perhaps there should be something in preferences to turn it off at one’s discretion. Many new users might not need advice, though, but that’s just a word of caution. (I ended all of those sentences in -tion. :P)
@Elocina
bot will evaluate based on number of edits done on respective platforms and number of edits reverted and amount of success percentage. Plus a graph showing progress of each login. @June
Days how can you wait when your timings are completely different and irregular.No one will wait !
@IShareMahKnowledgeWisely
Thanks for clearing out the bot problem as said by elocina and June Days . Regarding the message generated: They would require some work and algorithms before we put them to test.The messages will be created by experienced users and left in the database.They won’t write it on daily basis just once and these will be used as tips and sended to users based on their performance and best edits.Even the amount of thumbs ups can be shown in the messages.And if the user wants to welcome then they can just type welcome all button in the message bar (Hope if we can add such a bar ) present along with the tips bar.

I agree with that a lot.
Also, wouldn’t that take up Talk Pages? I actually do think it’s a really clever idea though. Thanks, @Genius_Knight
!
Geunis Knight, plenty of people wait.
CiCi, since it’s a bot, no. June Days
Can I suggest that a better way to implement this might be to show a random tip on the login confirmation page, or perhaps in the site-notice type area? I quite like the idea of a random tip function in principle - I just don’t think contacting on user pages is the right way to do it. And maybe they should be turned on by default with an option in preferences to turn them off, to save all this algorithm malarky?
An excellent strategy. I would support this, in fact.

Yep, I’m not seeing any faults with this, other than the amount of patrollers may decrease some…

I like this idea! I’d prefer it to be opt-in, here’s why: Research done over at Wikipedia, and my observations over the years, reinforce the idea that people generally are turned off by automated messages (even templates) rather than helped. Personally written messages, based on what people are doing, are always the best way to go, and only humans can do this
On the wikiHaus end, we try to avoid spending precious engineer time on developing bots unless we know that it can do something better than people can do. And in this case I think people are way better at helping people than bots are
We also have a precedent at wikiHow that any unsolicited, automated message (like project invitations, or user page design offers) is considered “talk page spam”. I really like the idea, though - and with a few adaptations, it could really work! This is something you can set up so that people can opt-in, like they do for the wikiHow Herald. Maybe you could start a list, and see how many people are interested in subscribing to daily help tips? Someone would also need to keep writing tips, and maintain the project.
@Bushbyhead
thanks for improving the idea !
Kudos! @Krystle
I was waiting for someone to say that!
Great ideas Busbyhead and Krystle, support!
