Hey ya’ll,

One of our engineers, George ( @G.bahij ), has been working on a nifty script to help find articles with possible wikiText issues. Many of these issues lead to problems with how articles display, how they show up in the wikiHow apps and on international sites, and how they “behave” within other tools and features around the site. Sooooo, our goal is to fix them – is anyone game to help with this project?

Because the script is only so smart, not all of these articles will need fixing, but many will, and checking them for problems and fixing any that you see would be a GREAT way to help out. Any and all fixes are appreciated, if you’re willing to lend a hand:slight_smile:

The big things to look out for are in 3 different areas (and sheets on the spreadsheet):

  • Sources and Citations Issues - potential problems include:  missing {{reflist}} templates, broken <ref> or </ref> tags, use of <references></references> tags instead of {{reflist}}, misnaming of the == Sources and Citations == section (like: Sources & Citations), etc!
  • Steps Issues - potential problems include: Missing Steps header, Steps header with too many or too few == on either side, overall formatting issues that affect Steps.
  • Spacing Issues - the big ones here are too many spaces before a step or too many lines before a new step. You’ll probably see what’s wrong easiest by looking at the article and noticing any places where the step numbering is broken (for example, it starts over at 1).

I know I was blown away by our quick and accurate progress through the 911 Project earlier this year, and I’m hopeful we’ll make some real awesome improvements here too. Take a look at the spreadsheet below and let me know if you have any questions!

Check it out  here!

Just fixed “Clean Bronze” but had trouble adding my name. Probably all I’ll do for today (It’s late).

Sweet @Danielbauwens , thanks! I followed up behind you with the reflist fix here:  http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=Clean-Bronze&diff=17709598&oldid=17709494 - that’s the cause of a lot of these errors, so worth looking out for. And I added your name:slight_smile:

This would be really fun!

I could try this. Is it going to detect other problems, like the wrong bold text, or any html problems?

@CastleClashWriter - That’d be great! I added some clarifications about what we know so far with these titles; see my edited post above. But if you see any problems with bolding, HTML, etc, while you’re in there, definitely feel free to fix that too:slight_smile:

I love this project! It feels great to be able to participate in a project!

Just a heads up for anyone working on steps issues… I found  http://www.wikihow.com/Win-at-Spades that needs some collaboration to fix major formatting issues. I added {{format}} and {{attention}} tags and demoted it, and made note of it in the spreadsheet.

I attempted to fix that one. I think that I got it to meet the formatting guidelines.

I am in.

If I come across any articles like that, I’ll help!

/me wants to help, but knows if I had more time in my day I would. (Not even mobile helps me out!)

So, there are a lot of cite problems in that list.

The /me feature isn’t working for me.

/me tested the ‘me’ feature, and confirmed that it works for him.

/me should work. Trying with the /me in the first line and nothing below.

It has to be done on the first line in the very first initial posting of the message.

/me should work now. (The /me has to be the only thing in the message, and must be made in the very first publishing edit of the message for it to work,)

@LeahlovesGod - sweet! You don’t have to wait to come across them - you can find them in the sheet here

Already 7.5% done team – woo! Big shout-out to @Adelaide , @McDonalds1 , @Hootooshay , and @Darkfrost who’ve already fixed more than 10 each. I’m going to jump in and do some now - let’s keep rollin’

I will have a look at this tomorrow…had a little peek though. I’m zapped for today! Sounds interesting, though! :0)

@Anna Thank you for the mention.

The Steps issues are done. Yay!!:smiley::smiley::smiley::smiley:
