During welcoming new users I (may be others) feel that the username policy should be specific, so that we can sure about a username. Here is the case of the “Extremely lengthy, nonsensical names”. That extremely lengthy name doesn’t specify any number of letters or any other thing. Example- If I choose a username is extremely lengthy and put a {{username}} tag, then another editor/patroller comes and they may not agree with me about username violation. So we need some specific number of letters that we can consider for the length of a username. That will also help us if we are going to have a welcome tool. Perhaps we could have a character limit when people create their username, so they don’t create a name that’s too long in good faith, then get told they can’t edit because of their username.

It’s the best idea ever possible for this issue.

I think by “lengthy” it actually means “nonsense”. So if someone has a name like, “HRUirusejjeuhtjh8374945^%E#&hfjfhjkhk560drtkipx”, then I’d take {{username}} into use. One example is @IShareMahKnowledgeWisely . Sure, it’s a long name, but it’s not completely random.

Hey but we can’t put a sentence as a username. If it’s okay, then we must have to remove that “Extremely lengthy” word from username policy.

Agree on this. “IShareMahKnowledgeWisely” is 24 characters. Maybe we can have the cut off at 25? (Spaces included) The actual username that IamSH was referring to of this forum thread is 36 characters, so I suggested to him to ask in the forums about this.

Can people stop with the limits? I’m lucky I didn’t get a username tag. The point is, I think we should let good-faith editors be good-faith editors…hesitate with the username tag until they show their worth. If their edits are as nonsensical as their username, then we should take action.

Well, I’m all for a 23 character limit.:wink:But yes, I agree with ISMKW totally.

So in regards to the actual point of this thread, we should allow company names, being so dearly long with no spaces be allowed? There’s a reason why there’s a 15-character limit on Freenode in IRC.

Well, there’s a point where a name is long , and then there’s a point where it gets ridiculous.

The Username Policy seems to be saying it most be extremelylengthy, nonsensicalnames. To me, that says that the name must be lengthy ANDnonsensical. I understand it as it can be long, but it can’t be ludicrous. So I would think that “IShareMahKnowledgeWisely” is acceptable, because it’s not completely nonsensical

It doesn’t answer the first question and has nothing to do with him:wink:What is the definition of “too long”? The initial concern is 36 characters with no spaces.

Okay, then there should be a 36-character limit…but no less than that. We should use “username” as an excuse, per se, for not making good quality edits, and merely sporting a nonsensical username. I just think we should not criticize another editor for having a name that exceeds a limit, but should point out his/her mistake if their username is both long and nonsensical. Name discrimination should be frowned upon, actually. (Besides, if someone does have a nonsensical username, and realizes his/her mistake, they can always ask Krystle to change it.)

How often does this happen? Was there a long username recently that spurred this discussion?

I’ve checked the new user log, in the last 2,500 created there were about 6 that were very long, none were nonsensical. 4 were company names, 2 were real names.

See? With so few, why implement a new regulation?

The way I see it, six is six more than zero, so that’s something. And I can’t see it being a huge issue unless the user starts editing, and odds are the account is abandoned- so many new ones are never touched from day one. I’m not sure a hard-and-fast rule should be implemented unless an editor with a ridiculously long/nonsensical name becomes active in the community.

… Are you accusing me of something? 0_o No, I’m sure you don’t mean me. I just don’t see a need for a limit.

The way I see it, if the name is absolutely jumbled nonsense, then it’s against policy. That’s just my stance.

I agree for the most part with the quoted post. Honestly, usernames are one thing I’m a little bit more lenient with personally… if a person is intentionally creating a username to vandalize then that’s one thing, and it should be apparently quickly if they are, but we don’t want to scare away editors the second they login for the first time, just because they have a “maybe not so good” username… I see a similar issue with the no “famous people” usernames policy…unless it’s obvious the user is trying to impersonate a famous person, I don’t really think we need to scare them away with a username template. For instance, someone might join under the name Bill Gates and might get a username template…however, it could be a legitimate man who is named William Gates and is joining to make many positive contributions to the website, not to impersonate the Microsoft leader.
