My article “Do Harry Potter Nails” was up for FAC for about 5 months. It got (about) 24 supports (is that what they are called?) and no one disagreed. It got removed from the FAC list. I read the reasons why, but they did not make sense. I had step-by-step images, which the message stated the article needed. Alot of users agreed, so it can’t be that. Why then? Thanks.

This topic has been discussed, often due to questionable selections that are featured, but in reality, Featured Articles are not selected by vote tallies. At one time or another, individuals on staff have chosen them, I believe Krystle is presently managing most of the selections, but Flickety and Jack have done it in the past. Criteria vary, but two things stand out in making an article featured, relevance, for instance, is the topic related to a news-worthy event, holiday, or another cultural event, like the FA about Spoiling the Olympics being featured to coincide with the games. The other major criteria is the decision that the article is one of the best articles on the internet in respect to the topic. Minor issues that might be considered are whether the article will draw pageviews, retweets, and other site-wide benefits, how unique a topic is, and probably some considerations I am missing. That doesn’t mean a particular article isn’t good enough to feature, it could simply mean it has been overlooked. In the case you used for an example, I am not a Harry Potter fan in any way whatsoever, but the article itself is great.
