I’ve drafted some guidelines for custom titles on my user page. Check them out here !

Draft Summary:

  • Google Autocomplete suggestions will be used for URL titles, in addition to Google Trends. For URL titles based on Google Autocomplete suggestions, a custom title should be added.
  • Page titles from competing websites such as eHow and HubPages, as well as news websites indexed by Google will be used as a source of inspiration for the custom article title, but the exact titles from those websites shouldn’t be copied verbatim, but one’s own words should be used in order to write the custom title.
  • Title case will be used in wikiHow custom article titles (the same capitalization rule as regular, URL-based article titles).
  • For Admin/Booster/Staff users, an “Edit Custom Title” button will be available on all main namespace articles in order to add/edit custom titles.
  • For other registered users, the form for submitting custom article titles will continue to be used. All custom titles submitted in that form by these users will be approved by an Admin/Booster/Staff user.
  • The URL title should be used for adding an internal link to an article with custom title, notthe custom title itself.

@JayneG , is this accurate in stating any admin or booster can add custom titles? I guess I was thinking this was a staff-only thing, but perhaps I am misremembering.

Ah, right, yes this is just staff at the moment - good catch! Perhaps more wishful thinking for admin and boosters at this stage:slight_smile:

Today I’ve made two more edits to my draft before it becomes an official wikiHow Policy.

By 2025, I’ll draft guidelines for subtitles and the Things You Should Know section, if these experiments continue!
