If you go to use the Copyedit tool , and have no categories selected, below the word “Categories” will be a weird warning message concerning some sort of invalid argument, which doesn’t load all the way, probably due to how much room there is to display it.

I use Google Chrome, and am on Windows 7.

Oh that’s a weird one! I just opened up the tool and saw a category ok but maybe there’s a specific one that’s iffy. What do you have selected? Would you mind deselecting and reselecting it to see if the error goes away or sticks around?

@Anna The warning message is only shown if I have no categories selected. I just now selected the “Cars and other vehicles” category and it showed fine. But, when I deselected it, boom, there was the warning message.

Ah I see. I’m not sure the tool has ever worked with no categories selected. I think you have to either select all or pick one or more specific ones. Do both of those scenarios work for you? I’ll check into it some more when I’m on my laptop later though- just looking from my phone for now. The error does seem funky either way so I’ll see if I can reproduce it too!

@Anna Both scenarios do work for me.

I am re-opening and bumping this thread since the warning message continues to be present to this day. I should have mentioned it earlier, but also, when I go to select a category to copyedit from, the image for the ‘Arts and Entertainment’ category doesn’t display correctly. @Anna ?

Ok, thanks McD. If anyone else is experiencing this issue too please chime in- would be good to know what operating systems might be seeing it consistently. Thanks!

I am re-opening and bumping this thread again, and have changed the title, since I have seen that the warning message not only appears in the Copyedit greenhouse, but the Stub, Formatting, and Cleanup greenhouses have this warning message too. Stub Greenhouse:

Formatting Greenhouse:Cleanup Greenhouse: @Anna ?

I see the error message when I have no categories selected. But why would you want to have no categories selected? That would give the same result as having all the categories selected…you’d get articles from any category. The error message is related to the fact that there is no category selected to display there. I don’t see this as a bug because it can be avoided by properly selecting some (or all) categories. Why is this a problem?

Because of the following that Anna said:

It might not be ideal but I think Jeff is probably right that if it’s working with one or all categories selected, we’re probably ok. Those are the typical use cases:slight_smile:

If you had read my first post, that is exactly what I said.

No. We are not okay. The warning message is funky, and makes things look yucky.

@McDonalds1 I was responding to @Anna who asked if anyone else saw the message. Select at least one category, and you won’t see the message. It’s very simple.

I could do it, but some may not wish to, which is why I want someone to get that warning message away from the greenhouses.

I think the author here is referring to making the warning message read something like “Please select a category to continue to use this tool.” I do feel the weird “implode() invalid…” looks a bit funny and unnerving (thinking from a person who might be the first-time visitor wandering into the tool without a category selected)'s viewpoint. I know I don’t have all of them checked, but the grand majority of the selections in the greenhouses for me are checked. (And when you read the definition of implode, (Merriam-Webster), to implode something means "to break down or fall apart from within : self-destruct ".) As long as it works otherwise, there’s no point in leaving it be like that, now that it’s been reported. Turn on some checkboxes and continue onward.

Regarding your first sentence, no, that is not what I am referring to, although that does sound like a good idea. Again, I use categories, but some may not wish to. Seemingly, though, there isn’t much that they can do to fix this right now, due to the warning message not showing the line number.
