Right now, there is not a way within wikiHow to search existing images. The Image Picker app only seaches for images on Flickr and wikimedia commons. It’d be nice to be able to search the images that already exist images within wH. A good way to help with this would be to tag or further categorize the images.
Hmmm…I always wondered if there was a way to search through them and figured I was just ignorant of the fact.
But there really isn’t any way to search through the existing images? That’d certainly be helpful…

The only way i know of is here http://www.wikihow.com/Category:Images
all images are there, but i agree this would be handy.

There is http://www.wikihow.com/Special:Newimages
- I think that searches through the images file names. The feature would be handy, I suppose, but it would be a mammoth task…

I’m not sure how making categories for images would fit into the WikiMedia software structure. Waiting for an engineer’s attention on this…

Ok, so I talked to a few folks in the back office about this. Seems like one of those things where the benefits don’t outweigh the engineering time investment. Harri’s right, though… Searching http://www.wikihow.com/Special:Newimages
works for searching file names.

This assumes that everybody uses useful filenames when uploading, and also ignores the bug
I reported in December. Is it relatively easy to start a category or does an admin have to do this? If it’s easy, we can do something similiar to what Wikimedia commons does and treat tags as categories (one of my original suggestions) and create an app similar to the recent patrol app and have people categorize pictures.
Hey Mike, This undefined image name problem was fixed a few weeks back. Anyone is welcome to start a category, but there’s a process for changing the existing category structure I believe for main namespace articles. Travis

To start an article category, you need to go through the Categories forum, separate from this one. We actually only have a few people who create categories to make sure the organization of categories remains consistent. Not sure if there are any implications for categorizing images. For example, I don’t know whether an image category page will display thumbnails or just the filenames. I also don’t know where it would fall under our existing category tree, but that’s something the category tenders could reflect on.

Outside of creating a whole new feature, I think this is the best way to go. I believe this is what wikimedia does: categorize (or tag) each image. I’m sure we’ll have categories that don’t make sense, but I think having them is better than not having them. Unless wH is not hurting for space…
