Just an early heads-up: The engineering team will be doing some maintenance today, likely this evening around 8pm PST for about an hour. During that time, articles will go into “read only” mode and you won’t be able to edit. So if you see a red maintenance message in the site notice, or if you get a warning when you try to edit something, it’s a good idea to save your text in a word/text document offline so that you can republish after the maintenance is over. Sorry for the “time out”! We’re hoping it will all be done within an hour, and we’ll get back to normal quickly. Come back here for any updates once it happens
Thanks for letting us know!!!

No prob Leah! Also, a PS: Any editing tools, including RCP, may behave in a “buggy” way or not work at all during this time. To avoid any lost edits or wasted effort, it’ll be best to just wait to do any editing (on article pages or through tools) until after the maintenance is over
Prior to that, it would be safe to edit?

Yep, totally! When we go into read-only mode, you’ll see warnings around the site in the site notice. The Dashboard will likely also be taken down to help avoid any accidental editing through the tools. That warning will look something like this:If you don’t see the warning, you’re a-okay to edit

We should be done with the database maintenance for now. Let me know if you see problems with data, such as edits to pages not sticking or other data-related problems. (We definitely do not expect any problems though!) Thanks for your patience, Reuben

Bumping this thread because we are going to make wikiHow read only again at 6 pm Pacific time this evening. The database maintenance should last less than 30 minutes this time. You’ll see the same red site notice as last time once the site is read only. Thanks again for your patience on this. We’re swapping databases again now that maintenance is done on the original master database (a failing battery, as well as software version upgrades). Reuben

We’re done with maintenance again, so you should be able to edit the site. If you get any weird data query errors or your edits don’t show up, let me know. (Things look fine from my testing though!) Thanks, Reuben
