What happened a few days ago was tragic. I want to create this thread to allow for civilized discussion as well as current news updates as to what happened.

This is not like the election thread, but this is something that is serious. I think creating an article on how to help victims would be great, but I do not know where to start for this. If someone can start an article that we can share with each other, then we can help other individuals take action.

To give some context from Wikipedia: On June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:20 a.m. EDT , [1] Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium building in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida , United States, partially collapsed . At least nine people have been killed and eleven others have been injured as a result of the collapse. [2] [3] [4] [5] About 35 people have been rescued from the uncollapsed portion of the building, [6] two people have been rescued from the rubble, [7] and 152 people remain missing as rescue operations continue. [8] [9] [10] [11]

I have some comments on this as well. This is completely atrocious. I have seen the start of what went wrong and some theories range from corrosion to sinking. This may also have a complete impact on condos in Surfside by the beach, as suddenly these may plummet down to below US$500,000 depending on the cause. The authorities have ruled out terrorism, so the only other plausible explanation is a structural deficiency.

I do not appreciate the media using the two words “third world” as those two words have very specific meaning: countries that did not have influence from either the US or Russia during the Cold War. It also implies that poorer countries have more frequent building collapses, which needs numbers to back up. I do not have statistics on building collapses from other countries but I can assume that poorer countries also have engineers designing buildings that will not collapse. Several buildings in poor countries have been standing for over 30 years, including an unfinished hotel in Pakistan that is still standing. I see far more buildings being damaged or collapsed during earthquakes than other times, with the exception of many Japanese structures that are earthquake resistant. A much better term is “war zone” as it creates chaos and war zones have a lot of blown-up buildings. But then this is my take.

The remainder of the condo was demolished today. There is an impending tropical storm that could hinder the rescue efforts.

Many other buildings in Florida have been evacuated and red tagged by engineers for being structurally deficient.

I hope they are safe.
