It occurred to me that it should be fairly easy to add an ongoing survey to the welcome message inviting people to it. No pressure, just something to find out what brought them to wikiHow and how they found it.

I agree with her. Atleast some links…

I always like hearing how people got here! I’ve come across a lot of folks who’ve ended up here when they went to look for help themselves, which is neat – getting help (or seeing a gap in the advice!) seems to inspire people to help others, which is awesome. I ask the ‘what lead you to wikiHow’ question relatively often when I welcome new folks, and we have done a little bit of email outreach with surveys along those lines, too. To be honest, not a lot of folks seem to want to answer surveys unless they’re already involved and active in the community (pretty low response rates from brand new contributors or sign-ups). It would be interesting to hear from more folks on how they found us, though. Maybe messages with the personal touch would be more successful? Like, when admins/boosters get a response from a new user to the welcomebot message, they could ask more about how the person arrived here - and when Welcome Wagon users are reaching out, they could ask. Those personal opportunities are the times when I’ve been successful in getting answers, more so than when we’ve experimented with surveys. Just my two cents, but others may disagree!
