Anyone else miss the level of discussion in the old General chat. Just glancing at the top 20 threads and they’re all games. What happened to intelligent discussion? Well in an effort to improve this perhaps we could discuss Obama’s third year in office - this year 2011.

I think it’s usually just games because it’s a place to “chat” (have fun, talk about not-very-serious things, that sort of thing) not really “intelligently discuss” (talk in a more serious way about serious things), but I’m open to change. I don’t really know what’s going on over in those political places, but I support Obama. Sure, he’s made some mistakes and hasn’t done some things he said he would, but overall he’s a great President and a nice guy (as far as I know, never having met him).

Yes, good job fellow Kubuntu user! (I occasionally use that OS, although I prefer my Mac.) These discussions do not happen for fear that discussing politics will cause a flame war. Now, back on topic. As a progressive, I would like to see the President stick it to the oil companies, threatening them with high taxes if they do not stop arbitrarily raising gas prices. I also hope that he can defend the EPA from being defunded or restricted, and it would not be a bad idea to set new corporate guidelines for greenhouse gas emissions. The President should attempt to improve some of the quality of life in America (investing in certain programs such as education and transportation) to help the economic turmoil. Finally, it would be nice if he could pass the Dream Act, but this is a bit unlikely due to the House leadership’s “no” stance on anything resembling immigration policy. The only things that I really dislike with the President’s leadership would be that he hasn’t gotten us out of Afghanistan (I was worried in the campaign when I heard him say that it was a “necessary” war), wasn’t able to get anything close to a public option in health care, and is becoming a bit too moderate in an attempt to placate the fringe on the other side.

Now, I do fear that a flame war will start…
