The current PC Games category is a bit inaccurate in its layout, I’d like to propose that we reorganize it with Steam Games being brought in as a new subcat like so:
-
PC Games
-
PC First Person Shooter
-
PC Real-Time Strategy
- Starcraft
- Warcraft Series
- Age of Empires Series
-
PC Roleplaying Games
-
Sims
- Simcity
- Sims 2
- Sims 3
- Sims 4
-
WolfQuest
-
PC Simulation
-
Online Games
-
Steam Games
- XCOM
- Counter Strike
- Left 4 Dead
- Quake Video Games
- Total War Series
- DOTA Series (rename from “Defense of the Ancients” as DOTA is the usual name)
- Stronghold Series
- Microsoft Flight Simulator
- Civilization Series
The reason for this is that Steam is a gaming application on PC – most PC games are on Steam but a few other notable ones (Overwatch and Starcraft for instance) are sold on other platforms like Battle.net
and Origin. So, this proposal - the games that aren’t sold on Steam remain in their respective categories and the games that are get moved to the Steam category. What do you think?
How would this work for games that are sold both in and out of Steam? Sims should also be categorized under PC Simulation.
I actually talked with Joel about this before he posted this thread, and his general thought was that Sims shouldn’t be under the PC Simulation category (though he didn’t clarify why); I personally don’t know enough about game genres and he knows more than I do, but when I did a quick search, the Sims games came up as being a “life simulation” genre. I think that may need to be shifted back.

Thanks for thinking this through. As the Computers category is already well into the process of being broken down behind the scenes, I’d like to ask that everyone please hold their thoughts on this suggestion for the moment and I will get back to you when I am close to updating this area. As some of the comments have already revealed here, categorisation isn’t as simple as making a single set of breakdowns adrift from the wider picture because interlinkages with other areas must be thought through, along with other issues such as appropriate terminology (it may not be what you think it should be), etc.
I am working very hard behind the scenes on the categories review. The Computers category is just as important as any other and it is going to be fixed shortly and things already stated have been noted. One of the BIG issues for this category is that a lot of the parent categories are not working and thus, this issue is going to be fixed as we get to it and will have wider impacts on lower level breakdowns. I cannot leapfrog this issue to deal with a single area at this point in time - to pull this out ahead of its scheduled updating makes more work for those of us working on the review and I am keen to avoid that.
I will get back to all of you on this thread when the PC Games category is being worked on. In the meantime, rest assured that the categories ARE getting updated (you can see this happening daily!) and this area is under scrutiny and will be mended. I am really grateful for the suggestion and will be sure to feed it into the process. When this area is being updated, I will get back to you on it.
