Since there are more users here that joined wikiHow this past year ( more wikiHow users that are attending school currently!), I thought it’d be a good idea to make a new thread about school. Post anything you want about your school, test anxiety, crushes, clubs, making friends, etc. Basically, post anything related to school and your experience so far.
For those not in school, you could share funny school experiences you had, or some tips for surviving school.

I made a thread this 2 years ago, so I’ll sum up the rules:

  • Don’t talk about things unrelated to school.
  • Don’t reveal personal information in this thread; don’t post where you go to school, your actual friends’ (or the person you’re dating’s name) names, etc.
  • Stay civil and be kind to the other users.
  • Try helping other users in this thread as much as possible! We all love helping each other here right?

For starters, how is everyone doing in school? If you just started a new school year, how was your first day? Did you meet any cool new people?

I’m homeschooled so I probably won’t have much to post here…

Same @FearlessOne lol- though I do go to a co-op

My first day was great! I finally saw my best friends’ face again and hugged my friend/crush/idkLastly, me and the small art class I’m in spent 30 minutes watching a kid through the window that ran out of the forest and just sat down in front of an old, rusty shed.

^Dang y’all are lucky… I wish I was homeschooled. I’m gonna be a junior in high school and I’m mostly excited, but also I am not looking forward to being with crowds of people…

Yeah I’m definitely an introvert:sweat_smile:and also no offense meant to any guys here but some of the boys at my school are just… well… they’re GUYS (the girls here will get what I mean heh):roll_eyes:Sometimes I wish I went to an all-girl school

^Yeah, same, teenage boys can get so loud and obnoxious sometimes. Although there are a few that are quiet and nicer, which is a relief from all the yelling in the hallways or the running everywhere.Turns out a ton of boys from my Mandarin class are in my AP Calc class (just wishing there were more girls I knew!). English was relaxing after the introductions- some of them were funny! And for PE, RIP I didn’t know many people.

Also, @FearlessOne @MaddieIsGone how does homeschool work? Like are there special programs for homeschooled kids or something? The closest I’ve been to homeschooling was the extra year of online school I took in 2021-2022.

Here’s what I told my other public schooled friend;
I have an online curriculum. Records, however, are kept on a real school file thing (it’s a physical school but also an online thing for homeschoolers. I think it helps with having schooling proof for getting into colleges or something like that).
I also go to a co-op which is like a traditional school but only twice a week and you choose whichever classes you want.

Of course, it may differ between people. Liora’s experience could be completely different than mine.

Well, my mom actually created a whole school program/curriculum/thing for my siblings and I, she makes-then-prints the worksheets (like math, spelling, grammer, etc.) for us, and teaches us herself. Its actually a lot of fun, we even have a big chalkboard and individual desks and stuff.

Woah, have you been in homeschool your whole life? Your mom sounds like a super hard-working person, teaching you guys every day with curriculum she makes herself! Also, do you and your siblings get taught different things?

This year my school has a new phone policy; they used to allow phones during office hours and in the PE locker rooms (and you didn’t have to put your phone in the phone pocket in every classroom).

This year, they won’t allow phones for the whole day, except during lunch. Every student has to put their phone in the phone pocket when class starts. At least it cuts down on people secretly staring at their phones in their crotches during class (it doesn’t look good).
Guess I can’t revive some forum games and go onto the forums much in school…

We all learn pretty much the same thing, and yeah, she puts a lot of work into it, she has been homeschooling for about 30 years now.

Replying to @Midnight_Dreams 's comment:

Idk how Common Core was taught in 6th grade in my state (I was in private school, we had different books and curriculum), but we didn’t learn 2-variable equations for another year - 7th grade.America is kinda behind, 2-variable equations are in Algebra I, which is usually taken in 9th grade (freshman year). I’ve heard from my parents that in Taiwan’s public schools, they taught trigonometry/pre-calc in 9th grade (kinda what I learned in freshman yr)- stuff that follows what I learn in each grade level bc I take advanced math courses and hence, share classes with ppl older than me (like ppl in 11th and 12th grade). And yeah, there are quite a few Asians like me in the courses lmao.

I’m in AP Calc now, and idk if we’ll even use the number i . From what I’ve heard, calculus is just derivatives and integrals. Last year it was a pretty short intro of that number, so I don’t know much about it either.

Oh yeah, and to address the huge chunks of topics vs. tons of different topics, I learned a bunch of different topics in elementary school. The Saxon Math book was organized by lesson, and each lesson could be totally different than the next. It was slightly unpredictable, and you could be talking about slopes of lines in one lesson and probability the next. We used that book for another year (6th grade). Although in algebra class and later geometry, we did get a book that only talked about those subjects.
In American high schools, our online books are based by math branch. Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Calculus (which is divided into AB and BC, BC is even harder than AB), and Statistics.
These are definitely organized better, because each unit is about one topic. Like, one unit could be focused on quadratic equations and how to graph/solve them.

Edit: I just realized how wordy this response is. Hopefully it isn’t too long for ppl who read this!

I read it all but I’m too tired to understand lol

*the imaginary unit i , whoops, typo in my other post
Ahh that helps understand the US system a little better, I can’t say I knew much about it before that. Same with when I’ve been on exchange programmes/visits in the past, the school systems and sets of exams in general are hard to get your head around from country to country. It’s interesting. But also, confusing:sweat_smile:

Sorry for that, I just get overboard with the explanations sometimes (might explain my oversharing lmao).

No no, I believe I’ll understand once I’m well rested/my brain works right. I’m grateful when people ‘over’ explain things (I’m very detail oriented)

Not an overboard, keep the detail. Reading personal experience explained to me much more than a Google search out of curiosity ever could.

heyy guys i just saw this thread!

i’m starting a new school this year— a boarding school no less… (fret not, i applied myself, none of that parents sending me away funny business)

kinda scared because i’m coming in randomly in the middle of highschool and this is my hardest year yet SOOO not really looking forward to that

i’m also super scared to like, meet new people, because i was going to the same school for basically my entire life prior to transferring. kinda fun kinda scary?? but it’s a really good school and they’ll have resources available like more APs that my old school didn’t have so it was the right move i think

how are y’all doing??

Hi! Pretty sure I saw you on the main site about a year ago- welcome back!

I started a new school (private to public) about a year ago, and I felt the same way! I had few friends last year since I was so introverted (plus, everyone already had their friend groups from middle school or maybe even earlier). I’m now following some tips my old friend gave me (plus wikiHow articles lmao) to make more friends.

I guess you have to face your fears and talk to some new people in your classes. Introduce yourself to them during an off period or lunch, and talk about school stuff and hobbies. Maybe you could find some clubs to join or (since you’re in a boarding school), talk to the people in your dorm!

yeah hey hey!! you probably knew me as olivia that was my name on here for ages

i guess the friends im less worried about talking to people because i am generally pretty extroverted but people can be put off by me when they first meet me because my interests consist of writing and reading philosophy LOL so i just gotta try to yap about … normal teenage girl things

excited for dorms, my roommate is pretty chill i like her but idk if she wants to be my friend HAHA my main fear is aps because im taking them for the first time this year and apparently ap euro is super hard

Oh yeah, I didn’t start taking APs until this yr too. The only APs I’m taking are the language and math ones. Hopefully AP Euro won’t be too difficult for you!:pray:
